Re-hash…Need to remove 12″ tiles on a sheetrock backsplash in the kitchen and install new tiles. I know the SR ig going to get torn up, at least the paper will peel off. Thinking about laminating a layer of 1/4″ hardie over the remaining SR and going from there. Or am I better off cutting off the remaining SR and replacing it? The tile will go corner to corner, and counter to upper cabs, so thickness is not an issue. And if I replace the SR, should I add a layer of Hardie anyway?

just cut the rock out & replace the rock with the same thickness drywall . there is no need to put dura rock on it because its not being walked on .
pop the bottom & upper tiles cut the rock with a sawzall being carefull not to go to deep !!when i do this i usally have my helper hold the end of a shop vac as i cut so the dust doesnt go allover ,open a window & put a small fan in there also if you can
Clear enuff...cept there's no top & bottom tiles...see attached.

Have you considered tiling over the existing tiles? No dust no mess.
I know deep down most of us don't like leaving anything that we want to replace under new work, but sometimes it may just make sense.
No Tom, that thought had not even occured to me. Not sure I like the idea.
