Personally I’d use composite trim, countersink holes for masonry screws and finish with composite plugs.
I’ve had problems with expanding concrete anchors in older houses, they seem to crack the concrete before they get really tight. I’d agree with the previous poster.
Using too big of a screw in a plastic anchor could produce a crack, though I’ve never had that happen. Metal anchors maybe.
I’ve never come upon siding that didn’t fasten to furring on block.
You can use concrete anchors for a solid hold, or strong construction adhesive if you want to avoid drilling. Both work well—just depends on the look and finish you’re going for!
