Reputable used tool srcs in NJ

emaxxman00 | Posted in General Discussion on January 29, 2008 07:17am

I am looking for reputable used power tool sources.  I would prefer a walk-in retailer if possible as I like to check out used equipment in person.  I’m in Hackettstown, NJ (NW NJ).

If there are reputable online retailers, please send those as well.  I will check them out too.

fyi – I did a search on “used or reconditioned power tools” but didn’t really find what I needed or was forwarded to places like the OEM site or Amazon.  Not really feeling the love at those sites.

Thanks.

Just saying hello because I saw your subject line and I was going to make a smart allec remark like "there are just notroious used tool dealers in NJ",  then I saw that you are from Hackettstown (my home town).  Hope your search goes well.  You didn't say what kind of tools you were looking for.  I've used Grizzley for some things that I didn't care if they lasted very long.  Also I rent when the cost is too high and i only need it for a short period of time.  Otherwise, I usually buy new and higher end to last.

btw.  do you know Gary of A&S Construction in Hackettstown?  He is a good friend of mine.

    Regards,

    Roger

Sorry, stupid me.  I am putting in a new tile and HW floors.  I would be looking for used wet saws (already have a straight manual tile cutter) and flooring nailers.

Sorry, I don't know Gary but I think I've heard of the business name.  I'm just an enthusiastic and slightly competent DIY'r.

For used tile saws, I would check with a tile shop that sells new.  They might have a lead on someone who is looking to upgrade."Put your creed in your deed."   Emerson

CPO tools is a large resell of recon tools.http://bosch.cpotools.com/index.htmlNow I was only able to get to the Bosch part, but I think that they have some other brands.Check for the factory service centers for any of the brands that you are interested and check out any local branches. They often have factory recon and stuff that was never picked up after repairs..

I got myself an inexpensive diamond wet saw for the tile (paid about $70 new at Lowes of HD); I've done probably 1200 sq ft of tiling using that saw.  You should be able to find something similar for similar price.  For Flooring nailer I got the Grizzley stapler (~$170); did about 2800 sq ft of flooring with it.  Wasn't real great, but it did the job with occasional re-greasing of the cylinder.

Like other poster, I bought a cheapo ($88) 7" workforce wet saw. Did 5 kits and about 14 baths w/ that sucker, still runs fine.

Floor nailer, I wanted air actuated (easier to whack in tight corners), so rented the two times I needed it.

        Good luck

There are lots on ebay that specialize in recon tools.  Most do a select # of brands in my experience.  Go to ebay and search for the brand that interests you then add reconditoned to the search.

Heavy Duty Tools .net sells most brands new but does not do recon.  They have had great reviews here ( they are local to me) and I tend to pimp them a lot.  He has been out of stock on a lot of stuff lately though.

A local tool store that does repairs will often have used tools for sale.

     Try rental places too...buic

Search ebay and drop  your zip into the box and click the radius you want to use, then find out from the seller if you can inspect.

Tool rental places often sell used tools, you try them.

I picked up a $1200 Honda 3000 watt generator at Home Depot rentals for $575.Also got a 10' Vanmark brake with new stand and new slitter for $888 (retail of all items would have been $1700)And picked up a MK660 wet tile saw with a ton of accessories at HD for $288 (retail of all the stuff they threw in + saw = $800)But I'd have to say the very best resource is Craigslist.I've gotten so many great tool deals, both new and used from folks selling on CL... Plus I sell a bunch of tool through there as well.Craigslist is like like the utopia of the internet age. Absolutely free, no strings attached.Julian

I agree, Craiglist is a good way to buy or sell tools.

        >> Craigslist is like like the utopia of the internet age. Absolutely free, no strings attached. <<

FYI:  Craigslist is not free in all areas of the country.  I have noticed since they started charging here in Cali, the number of ads have gone down significantly.

The ONLY thing they charge for is some cities apt/realestate listings and some cities jobs posting.Everything else is free.JT
