I need to put a new ashfalt shingles over an existing roof. There is only one layer of roofing material presently. Can I just add the new shingles over the old or do I need to put down roofing paper first.
I know this is an easy question for most of you but I just want to make sure I do it right. This is an ivestment property and I want to make it right for the new owners.
Thank you in advance for any advise.

No need to put felt. You can go right over em.
Just go over the old shingles without felt, and put the top of a new shingle against the bottom of an old, so you end up with less waves. I think there are instructions for reroofing on the package.

Sean - If you do it the way zak suggests, you will have a smoother job. Just beware, your bottom course or two will be smaller/shorter exposure. Once you get it adjusted, you will follow the lines from the existing roof and it will work fine.
(By the way, have you checked to ensure the existing roof is only one layer and the rafters can handle the additional weight?)

Thank you all for the quick feedback. I will have someone look at my rafters just to make sure it can carry the extra load.
