I was asked today to put together a proposal for a deck being added to a restaurant for outdoor summer eating.
This will be off the front of the building, aprox 14′ x 53′. There was no decking material specified. What do you suggest is suitable for a commercial application like this? Consider the useful season is only May thru September (if we’re lucky) here in New England.
This is a German restaurant and more casual than anything with a 30-40’ish cliental. This will only be 18-24″ off the ground and all one level is the plan.
Any ideas and experiences would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Stu

Sounds like a job for Ipe. They re-did the Atlantic City Boardwalk with it, and it's an extremely hard wood.
Thank you for the tip.
A quick check on the web indicated $4.99 / sq ft and "rare" flashing. Very expensive and hard to get. AC must have really dried up the supply for a while.
I think a more economical alternative is in order. What is Ipe's advantages? Maybe I can arrive at an alternative.Stu
I think you will need to check with board of health. See what they will sign off on.
They may not like a deck that could have food falling between the cracks and attracting rodents and pest under deck.
Fred-
That's a great point. I better get that approved up front before they see the rodents and pests on the job site with hammers and power tools!!The town hall is right across the street from the site and I stopped in yesterday to see the building inspector. Never thought of the health dept!Stu
So a tounge and groove decking would satisfy that requirement I imagine.
Have you ever dealt with a health dept on that?
