In the Fine Homebuilding Winter 2011 Home Remodeling Guide (page 22), there was an example of a fireplace remodel where a cement skim coat was applied over a brick fireplace, but no “how-to”. My husband and I would like to do the same to ours. However, unlike the example, our brick does not go all the way to the ceiling, so we would have to frame out part of it, as we do want to extend the fireplace all the way to the ceiling. We’re kind of new to the remodeling game, so don’t know how to approach this, or how complex it might be or what problems we might run into. Any suggestions on how to do this (including how to attach the mantel) or any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
