I have been doing 5 or 6 bathrooms per year for the past three years but have never done a mud Shower pan. One job I am looking at has an existing mud shower. After looking at it from above and below it seems to be sound with just a few tiles starting to come off the curb. My question is has anyone had any experience removing 1″ square tile from a mud shower and applying new tile to the existing pan? I would write the estimate with an open item to provide for replacing the pan should it start breaking up when I start working on it.

Well, remember this. Once you touch that job, it becomes your job. Any leak must therefore be one that your workmanship caused.
Even if it comes five years down the pike.
