A friend of mine recently stumped me on a building question. He has an indoor hot tub which is in an addition with a flat rubber roof. He wants to have a retractable roof to take a hot tub under the stars on nice evenings. We live in Northern Michigan so bad weather is a very real issue. Does anyone out there have any information, experience, links, etc.. with retractable roofs, or is it just a bad idea?
Thanks,
John

well ...
I was gonna say ... the Civic Arena in Pgh where the Pens "should be" playing ...
is a retractable roof ... and I know they need money ... so maybe make an offer?
then ... when I went searching for a good pic ...
I found this place.
Looks like they do exist. I'd search a bit more ....

I saw an ad in a magazine on an airplane recently. It was for a company that made retractable screen and glass enclosures for pools and patios. It looked a bit like the pool screen enclosures you see in FL, except there was a track in the concrete and the sections telescoped into and out-of eachother.
I will try to google but not sure how lucky I'll be.

BAM - here it is:

This doesn't really answer your question, but it was something I saw which I thought was cool...
As you may know, it rains a lot here in western Oregon. These folks had basically built their house in a C-shape around a patio and the whole thing was roofed using a standard pitch, with skylights over the hot tub. On the open side of the patio, they put in a standard garage door, complete with a heavy-duty opener, but where the panels were on the garage door they replaced with safety glass. So, when the weather was cruddy, you could sit in your hot tub and still see outside with the door shut. When the weather was nice, you just open the garage door and enjoy the summer breezes. Pretty nice.
Hope my description was understandable.
That does sound cool. Got any pictures, or pointers to pictures?
You might look around (Google) at home sized observatory buildings. A doctor friend had one built for his 5 telescopes. The roof rides on tracks kind of like a sliding barn door. It clamps down when not in use.
Yes,
I think it's a GREAT idea. Once it's in he'll definitely wanna show everyone he knows, you might get a few more clients.....
