I’ve been asked to install a 28″ x 45″ Velux skylight in a bathroom. The 28″ is the height and the 45″ is the width (i.e. running parallel w/ridge). The bathroom is on a 3rd floor and the HO wants it installed into a vaulted part of the ceiling, directly over the bathtub.
Half of this ceiling is roof rafters, with the rest of ceiling flattening out about halfway in(collar ties). The attic crawlspace above is TIGHT, and I have serious hesitations about getting 14′ 2x 12s up to the attic. What I’m wondering is what alternative do i have to sistering 2xs to the common rafters and heading off. I’m wondering if a piece of steal with a sh*tload of nails into the common rafter would be sufficient to carry the header which could potentially (depending upon where the layout lands) carry 3 rafters. If not, what alternatives do i have?
I should note that I eyeballed the roof as about a 4 pitch.

I don't suppose they would accept three skylihgts each 14" wide.
