Ridge Board for 8″ rafter ,12/12 pitch
Hello,
Quick question:
Should I use a 2×10 ridge board for an 2×8 rafter and 12/12 pitch roof, or bump the ridge up to 2×12?
In the past (12 years ago) I’ve done this with a 2×10 and build out the bottom with a 2×2. Does this pass code nowadays?
Thanks,

Roger, I do things like that all the time. I've never failed an inspection for doing that. The idea is to prevent the bottom of the rafter from splitting out because it's not bearing on anything.
One other suggestion.....when we are using continuous ridge vent, I simply drop the 2x10 down to the bottom of the plumb cut and leave the "filler" out. This gives the ridge vent a nice open channel of air flow.

I pad the underside of the ridge all the time .
no problem with any of the 10 counties I've worked in here in northern Illinois.
I do it all the time also and nevr had a problem Your plans should tell you what to use anyway. Your 2x8 with a 12/12 plumbcut will be about 10-5/8" so it will be sticking down about 1-1/8" from the bottom of the ridge Can't see or have ever seen where that would be a problem.
The roof I'm framing now are 2x12 rafters with a 2x12 ridge and a 6/12 pitch and the plumbcut is 12-7/8" hanging down 1-3/8" . Do the plans call for 2x10 and you just want to go a little bigger?
Here's a picture of the roof I'm framing now with 2x12 rafters and 2x12 ridge.
Joe, that wouldn't pass code here. I suppose some inspectors might not notice it, but somewhere in my brain I remember getting violation for allowing the short end of a plumb cut hanging low. We just don't take the chance anymore.
