To All,
I am interested in knowing where we are all coming from, location wise. Too many folks don’t bother to fill out profiles, for some unknown reason. (Like, can we hunt them down if we know where they live?) LOL
Anyways, I would like to know the ratio of the participents here…what part of the country are you from?
I bet, it’s mostly right-coasters! Any takers?

Thang is....if I'm ripping sheets of ply or cutting the ends of rafter tails the wormer is great but when doing close up work I want more control with a lighter saw and be able to look down from above it which I dont feel comfortable with a wormer.

Andy,
Go to http://www.bigfootsaws.com and get yourself one of these "universal handles". It installs on the Bosch or Skil worms in like five minutes. You screw the bracket on the saw (uses holes already on the saws) and then the handle threads into the bracket. You can thread that handle in from either side for a left hand set up or a right hand set up. You can't believe the kind of control and versatility it adds to those saws. Six months ago I woundn't have dreamed of cutting a stair stringer with a worm drive.... now it's cake and pie. I was like you and only really used the worms for "drop cutting" where gravity was doing the work. This handle is worth every penny with the versatility it adds. Threaded into the left side allows you to pull the guard back with your thumb and still have two hands on the the saw like you would with a sidewinder.
Sorry for the hi-jack but this thing's too good to not mention it!

Handle bars for your saw...geez, what will they think of next? Maybe a trigger interlock devise, so you blow to get it started? No more beers at work!
shockingly, when I worked in ca I saw more than one "carpenter" using framing hammers when doing finish work.
I'm curious...
With worm drives being popular on the Left Coast and sidewinders on the right. Were is the break off point? Somewhere in Kansas? Is there a "saw" line similar to the Continental divide? East of the Mississippi? Are there saw police? "You can't use a worm drive in our county"?Heads I win, tails you lose.

next time you drive to dryden take the north road to peshastin an' marvel at all the mcmansions where once resided pear trees, there's a winery but no grapes. hmm, maybe a couple of acres. you'll currently find me on top of the new water tower at ski hill.

I am from the center of the universe------Akron, Ohio.
and------since saw preferences seem to matter
Milwaulkee sidewinders------corded and cordless. ( the cordless one rocks-----I doubt I have hauled out the corded saw 8 times all year-----of course I am mostly just cutting roof sheathing and the occasional rafter and/or rafter scab)
pye,
Heading over later this afternoon for T-day with son and his DW. So are you working on water towers or what?
Dez
The house is off a side road off skihill drive about halfway up. It turns to the west and the house is on the south side of the road. It was built by a realty from Marysville. I'm going to have to run up there to get you the address though. I'll take a swing up there tommorrow and post it if I can. And, yes, I'm involved with a new water res./steel tank at the top of skihill and a booster pumpstation nearer to town. This project is probably going to close down for the season. I might make a buck on the booster pump building but I think the resevoir is a wash, hmm.
Pye,
Came back this morning during that little snow storm. I can't believe how freaky some folks get with a little white stuff on the roads. There was maybe 3" on the road as we left Leavenworth, and several cars were in trouble on the way up Stevens Pass.
But then you got the SUV drivers that think they can just fly now...but forgot that they didn't know how to drive in the snow before.
It was a good trip, being with family and all. Hope yours was good also.
Dez
Thanksgiving was unbelivably nice day. You always got to watch the kooks zooming up there in SUV's. They're already in 4-wheel with their all season radials and don't have an option or a light enough foot when they get in trouble...when I was commuting over to the wet, evil side of the mountain a few years back I came upon a hummer nosed into a big ol' drift just west of the pass. He was dancing around it so I checked to see if everbody was okay, he was so pissed cuz he'd paid blah, blah ,blah and the @#$% thing wouldn't go in the snow and even his cell didn't work @#$%... I offered to give him a ride back up to the lodge but he looked at my old truck and turned me down. I will admit the few times I've been rushed or THOUGHT I KNEW EVERYTHING ABOUT DRIVING ON FROZEN WATER I've had some humbling reminder. I work with a guy who has a huge ford with enormous tires that's gonna provide me with entire season of entertainment better then watching grandma eat cheese pizza with her teeth out.Peace.
Pye,
Ahhh, the big tire thing. Funny that so many think that a big wide tire is going to do better in snow...when in reality, skinnier tires actually work better. Several years ago I was working for a builder, and the two super's were brother's. Both had BIG trucks with the lift kits and monster tires on them.
We had a pretty good snow overnight and I woke up to about a foot of new. I left for work about an hour earlier to make sure I was there on time, only to arrive at the deserted jobsite...alone. Called the office...asked, "where is everybody?" They said nobody was coming in because they were stuck. I said, I had the furthest to drive, and only had two wheel drive on my truck, and I made it!
Had a pretty nice day working all by myself!
Peace
Here's another from the San Fernando Valley of Southern California and a vote for worm-drive saws to match.
Started in construction (framing) back in the late 1950's and never saw anything besides Skilsaw 77's. Still own several, including the lighter 77 Mag, and only one Porter Cable sidewinder. Being right-handed, I always found it much more natural to follow a line without having to hang over the saw to see the blade.Still puzzled as to why sidewinders are so popular on the East Coast...
I grew up in woodland hills. Is there any land left to build in the valley now days? Last time I was down there was in '75.
Dez,Woodland Hills is still a very nice part of the SFV. No vacant land, but teardowns of some places built since you left in '75 now have 800K replacement homes. You would not recognize much - new freeways, malls, and shopping centers. Sepulveda dam is all golf courses and parks. Not all bad - some nice residential developments. West Valley to Calabasas is very upscale... Ventura Blvd. looks like Wilshire Blvd. did 30 years ago.Nostalgia isn't what it used to be! ;-)
I'm sure I wouldn't even know my way around now days. When I lived there, there was still many empty lots on Ventura Blvd! I lived on Topanga Canyon Blvd. one block from Mulhulland Drive. It was a dirt road when I was a kid. Great dirt bike country in the hills back then. Topanga Plaza was the largest indoor mall on the west coast! LOL

You are the first person I have met here that I SERIOUSLY envy in 6 years or so!
I have been visiting your Island most summers since about 1965--------big changes since then---huh?
Your Island is simply the most beautiful place in this country I have seen( in my opinionion)---from california to maine
Out of curiosity----I wonder how old you are and how far back you can remember?
One of my earliest memories in life is fishing on the old piers UNDER the ramp to get on the ferry down by the coast gaurd station. I can also remember some of the commercial fisherman tieing up to the docks with their nets piled up on deck-------they would let us pick sea horses out of the nets( a 4 year old kid from Ohio had never seen sea horses before!
In my memory---I don't think there were any buildings between the old navy machine shop( painted sky blue in my mind) and the community store and Jack's
We camped for years in an army surplus tent in the camp ground down by coast gaurd station( parking lot now)
later we rented a house from a family friend off of howard street----it's now a book store/pottery----you will know the one I mean for sure. that friend used to show us pictures of the ferry he used to use---looked like WW11 landing craft---ya had to drive off through the surf
It took me about 45 minutes to type all this----I keep getting excited and jumping up and pacing around the room remembering all this-------it's been 4 1/2 months since I have been there and I need my fix!
Anyhow----thanks for all of y'all letting us visit your island------it has always ,always, ALWAYS been the biggest privilege in my life
Thanks again
Stephen
Out of curiosity----I wonder how old you are...
Greetings Steve:

be there
I use my Porter Cable framing saw (blade right) more often, but I love to use my Mag 77 worm drive to cut mahogany doors. As to where I'm from -- for the past 5 years St. John and St. Thomas, USVI; Cape May, NJ for the five years before that... Block Island, RI for a year ... Auburn, AL for the college years... Ft. Lauderdale, FL for middle through high school... Chicago, IL for a year of elementary... and Kowloon, Hong Kong all the way back to when I was born.
Great. Nothing like the experience of travel.
What part of the country you're from now could be put into your profile.
Cheers.
rez,
please read all of the following in good humor. lol
there are 2 kinds of people in this world------those who will attend meetings and conventions happily wearing those name tags which say " hello,my name is ----"------and those who won't.
I am one of the ones who won't wear name tags.
( actually there are 2 kinds of people----those who divide people into 2 categories----and those who don't.---LOL)
Now---------to explain the reasoning without being overly arrogant--------I have been coming here a long time. Off the top of my head I can only think of about 4 people currently here that were here when I arrived------Mike Smith, Jeff Buck,Pete Draganic and The newly returned Blue.------ I am sure there may be others---and sorry if I missed 'em------however
I know everything I care to know about Mike , Jeff,Pete, and Blue------I know where they are from and what they do-----because I pay attention to what they write---and I remember. I assume others do the same about me. I certainly have written my little lifes' story a number of times in this forum-----so if someone doesn't know who I am,or where I am from, or what I do-----they haven't been paying attention.
If someone else comes along that interests me like Bob, or Greencu or whoever---then I pay attention to who they are and what they write.
I am happy to learn whatever they choose to reveal about themselves-----and whatever they choose not to reveal about themselves is their business.
I am certainly not gonna let myself be pressured into wearing an electronic name tag!!! LOL
I do,however, sympathise with the folks who have a bit of a hard time keeping track of the players here. I have been busy and un-able to stop in here for a few weeks-----and when I did stop in I saw that Jeff was posting under a new account/name-------took me reading about 2 of his posts and about 30 seconds to pick up on it.
Ya see----I know that I personally have been screwed up here about half a dozen times or more by FHB changing a perfectly good format and making me re-register. Or---- I personally change ISP 's and find that Prospero or whoever won't let me register under my same name and password----so it makes it a little tough to keep track of some of the players------but it ain't really life and death is it ?
so---in short----I prefer to know people here by their actions----the quality of what they write and the fairness of their actions. If I want to know more, (like in Tyke's case) I will ask them directly----they are free to respond---or not---as they choose.
good luck all, Stephen Hazlett
You have that completely wrong. There are 3 types. The 3rd will follow the Letter of the "Law", but not the Spirit (unless it is 100 proof).
Bill,
I am not quite sure I get your point----but I bet it was a funny one.
But
On the other hand---I CAN see the possibility of 3 types
1) those wearing name tags
2) those not wearing name tags
3)those auditioning for the crew of the love boat " hi, my name is Julie---I will be your cruise director----why aren't all of you wearing those name tags we provided for you ?"
Am I getting close?

Stephen,
Gald to hear you really have enjoyed our island for so long and still continue to come back. Because we know how much it's changed.
I moved here with my mom and sis in 1978, after my parents got divorced. My grandparents bought the island inn in in the 60's then sold. thats how came to this place from New Mexico. All my family's moved on from this place but after moving almost every year i just i aint moving and so i stayed. i did move once for the winter but only to return in the summer.
I remeber all the things you talk about and sometimes i think back to where some of the old houses were and now there are motels.it's kind of sad but that is also how i make my money. And with the resent building boom,if you call it that on a 2 sq. mile sandbar, we all have plenty of work.
i might move when i retire or something but till then i think i'll stay.tyke

Left Coast--Evergreen State--near the San Juans.
Spent many, many weekends rafting the Wenatchee from Leavenworth to Cashmere.
So your the sucker whooping it up in the river while I'm out there working, could you at least wave the next time.
Sadly, it has been many years since I've been on the river. I used to run a rafting program for youth, so I was on the river every weekend in late April, May and June. Haven't been for years, but now that my kids are older I'll be back over there on occasion. Let me know where you are and I'll douse you with a bail bucket or two.
Anecortes?
Well now here's a whole slew of folks, some that can tell us where they're from here but not in their profiles.
Why you think dat is, Dez?

I dunno...
I originally started framing in Colorado, wormdrives and rigging axes. Then I relocated to Winter Haven, Fla. using little short handled hammers and sidewinders. Now I frame in Idaho, back to using wormdrives. But, I have replaced the rigging axe with a Dalluge Sweet 16 titanium framing hammer. If I was smarter on this computer, I could tune it up and talk more, but its broke down about half the time. Anyway, framing for other contractors during the day and trying to complete my own home on weekends keeps me pretty busy.
CWB,
I'm curious why you changed using what you were used to, when you moved...and then changed back, when you moved again! Where ever I go, my tools go also. Sticks and stones...
Dez
At the time, I was employed by others, so Used their tools. Also, its just ridiculous to try and use a hammer that weighs 28 oz. with a 16 inch handle when you are beating 10d nails into 2x6 rafters. I never could convince those southern boys that a wormdrive beat out their old Rockwells. I've been self employed now for longer than I can remember, so I choose the tools the crew destroy......er uses.
CBob,
Ahhhh...got it.
Dez
That's a nice hammer. Our local lumberyard has them. If I didn't have the Ti-bone, that is the hammer I'd get. Glad you hear you are using wormdrives :-)
Guess i gotta chime in here, not many from California. Started in southern cal with a skill worm drive and now have been in northern CA, by Sacramento for 12 years. I now use a dewalt worm..little lighter and the blade is on the correct side. Only use marathons and 21oz Dalluge RZ
Vancouver/Burnaby, B.C. ,Canada, lived in Whistler and learned LOTS up there.'I've no desire to hang around with a bunch of upper-class delinquents, do twenty minutes' work and then spend the rest of the day loafing about in Paris drinking gallons of champagne and having dozens of moist, pink, highly experienced French peasant girls galloping up and down my - hang on...'
You start talking about my work habits and I'm gonna get mad .......Quality repairs for your home.

I'll be moving down your way within the next few months. (I'm currently 100 miles north of you.)
I hope to find a postion as punch/detail or warranty/customer service with a large builder.
See ya there!
Hello Darcy,
Welcome to the area. You should find plenty of big builders to work for here Let me know when you are comming. RZ
Hey, thanks Rob!
What kind of outfit are you working for?
I am hoping you can give me some heads-up on some of these builders. So far, I am using the Sac-Bee and the BIA to track down potential employers... not sure about that... also not sure I want to work for a company that builds 350+ homes a year...
My sweetheart Bob, is seeking a Project Superintendent/Construction Manager type job. He is a very qualified licensed contractor (New, Additions, Remods) also looking to make the move.
(I am not asking for any favors here, but any leads would be greatly appreciated...thanks)
Anyway, nice to meet ya...
We both missed Lisa L's Quakefest last summer, which was held in Sacto... maybe we can host our own West Coast Breaktime Fest next summer, yikes!
If you hold it during any of the hot months, don't expect to see me show up there again.;)

Darcy,
You are welcome. To answer your question, i am a GC that does small to medium projects- from home improvement like changing panels, installing lights, putting in ceiling fans to design/build room additions. Mostly room additions, high end kitchens and baths now. My next project is a 20x24 garage It has a 12 in 12 gable roof with working dormers and an apartment upstairs under the roof. We are doing it from the plans through finish. It ought to be fun.
You two shouldn't have much trouble finding work, although i personally have not worked for a 'big' company for years. There are always customer service adds in the Bee. I have heard that JTS communities is a good company to work for.
I wasn't around breaktime last summer so i never heard about any get together. I certianly would be interested in meeting the people here though. I love this place. There is so much to learn here and there are not many places with this caliber of information available that i have found. Good luck and keep me posted. RZ
Woohoo!
Bob got his job with Pacific West!!! They hired him as Quality Control from sheetrock to finish, and he starts 2/14. Most excellent starting wage, truck, laptop, digicam, etc. They are also giving him an apartment for free for our 2-3 month transition period!
We'll have to get together after we get settled!
see ya soon,
darcy
That is awesome! Hope you settle in here quick, the weather gets better soon. I hope we can get together some time See ya, RZ

darcy,
Didn't know of it's existance...missed that one thanks. I guess this could be considered an update then?
Where's "true northern california"? Yreka?
Dez
Well as far as I am concerned, anything above the SF Bay Area should be considered True Northern California. Cali is such a long state, it should be divided in thirds. (We get Sacramento.)
Most people have no idea anything exists above the Bay Area, however, I would apprececiate some division from the SF area. This is only because their land costs and pricing do not reflect True Northern California.
Plus, it is prettier here. We have everything. Beach, mountains, heat, snow, skiing, industry, agriculture...we gots it all...
Fort Bragg.....Red Bluff/Shasta area is about as far south as I care to go anymore. Fine country North of that imaginary border!!! :-)
Shhhh! Maybe we should keep this all a secret!
I love Fort Bragg! Been there many times...it's beautiful place. I still have a Noyo Nymph glass, which I treasure...<g>
Now if we could only stop So Cal from stealing all of our water...heck, don't they know we need it to grow food for them?

Officer Rez;
When you file your report, insist that the perps also include a mug shot with their profile.
Keep up the good work.

Location Location Location
Dear Sirs:
Seeing the difficulty of some to type a state abbreviation or country, I believe it would be too much for said mug shots to be required from the masses that have been pouring in to the ranks of BT.
The humble request of a general location to ease the parley of information and help ward off possible congestion as to how deep a footer or code concerns etc., I hope was taken in the good will intended in it's presentation, via serious discussion or humor, or such lame attempts as.
To the Mike Smiths, Jeff Bucks and Pete Draganics of the world we salute your patronage in the profile location.
It is certainly not a requirement of any fashion of necessity for one to provide a general location of their whereabouts and any degree of privacy requested will certainly be honored.
The publication of the location of a poster shall always be one of a personal choice as it should be, whether made thru it's placement in an open profile or via an independent statement in an individual post.
Seeing the request for a location placed in a poster's profile is, in a sense, a statement made to all fellow travellers on Breaktime's streets, I hope that this sweeping generality is taken as an invitation by all to place a location in their profiles as a helpful method to ease communication flow as mentioned earlier.
Not desiring a detailed address or even a city but a simple proximity as in 'northeast Ohio' or 'southern Cal'.
However, it must be publicly noted that the importance of profile to the function of Breaktime is seen only by individual posters here for it has been noticed that the moderators JFink and Brian P have as yet to place anything into their profiles.
Even with that being said, perhaps this simple invite may nudge some of those here, who may have overlooked their involvement in profiles, to take the minute to type in a location, whether they have posted once or a thousand times.
To all I remain informally yours,

darcy,
everyone in california knows that the state IS devided into thirds, southern, centeral, and northern..... geeh :), I have lived in all three and currently am in the city ( san francisco ). born in LA area ( Upland ) moved all about San Bernadeno ( sp ) county.... moved to the central valley as a teen ( Madera county, Fresno and Reedley), then out to the coast ( San Louis Obispo / Moro Bay ) in my late teens, then down to San Deiago for the Navy ( was not in SD for long, too busy sailing the Pacific ) then up to San Francisco after the navy... I have spent quite a bit of time north of here but only on a vacation/ short trips.
always good to find another west coaster here on BT.
