A FHB article on rigid insulation
http://www.taunton.com/finehomebuilding/PDF/Protected/021181088.pdf
the author prefers to use wood furring around window openings (page 89)
I plan to use 1/2″ xps over OSB with Marvin integrity or a Clad window
anyone out there with field experience anchoring the window fin OVER the rigid insulation instead of on furring strips(like the article). What is the best fastener?
if 1/2″ xps is OK..what about 1 inch…Will the window be Secure?
If I use treated wood furring strips, will the chemicals react with the XPS?

I am not a professional, but on TOH they once installed a window using only shims and Great Stuff (or similar). Based on that, it seems you would be ok doing that, which would attach the window securely and then the nailing fin wouldn't really be necessary.
Hopefully others will chime in here.

We use wood, plywood, or osb. With house wrap and bitethane window tape properly detailed you shouldn't need PT. If it's part of the structure, you might want to find the ACQ vs Nail thread before you choose fasteners<G>
Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out but when they will I can only guess.

I plan to do this on my own home some day, and I will use the wood strips at the windows. I don't trust the foam, it may let the windows move over time.
PT wood won't eat the XPS, only the nails holding the window. Really. See the nail vs. ACQ thread. Use stainless if you use the PT.
I don't want the windows just floating, and don't trust sealant/tape applied to foam. I plan to use Tyvek-faced polyiso board over ply sheathing for two reasons. One is for thermal insulation, the other is to act as a slip sheet under hard stucco. The staples holding the wire lath will have 1/2" of lateral bendy room so that the stucco is less likely to telegraph the movement of the underlying plywood. This is my theory. Anybody done this?

I often use Thermax ( the foil faced foam) over Advantec. It is less dense than your EPS or XPS. I install with long roofing nails or 8d, and then spray foam the void around from inside shortly thereafter.

Piffin, do you use the 1/2" advantek sheathing? If so, do you like it? The reason I ask is, the only time I've seen it used, a lot of the panel edges had swelled to a fat 5/8 in some places...of course those panels were used at window and door openings...made the bright finished trim a little tough<G> Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press

Yes, that is my sheathing of choice.
I can see a little swelling if left laying in a puddle or on the ground for walking on in the mud, but when on the sidewalls, the water runs off faster than it can do any soaking in that I can see. It is worlds ahead of regular OSB.Still not as good as their deck sheathing, but 100% better than other sheathing products. IMO

I'm glad to hear that. The swelled stuff that I saw was still in the bundle. I wouldn't use anything but Advantek for the floors, might have to give the wall sheathing a shot. Have you tried the roof system yet?Old dog looking for some new tricks<G> Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press

Roof system?I have used their 5/8" T&G, is that what you mean?Or the stuff where you need no underlay paper - just a peel'n'stick strip?I haven't gomne there yet

Yeah, the taped system. I've got another question on the sidewall sheathing, though<G> How do you detail the door/window head flashing without housewrap? I know that tape is some mighty sticky stuff, but... Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press

Majoity done this way were single story where the frieze was also the head trim stock. Did have one that was 2-1/2 stories at the gable end facing the ocean. I used the vycor to the foil and a rainscreen behind siding. Doing it again, I might use a Tyvek too, but so far no obvious leaks.
