For increased insulation I’ve seen it recommended to put 1 1/2 or 2 inch rigid foam under the siding. However most siding calls for the nails to penetrate the studs by 1 1/2 inch. This would mean a 4 inch nails. Can a person use furring strips, lag them into the studs, and attach the siding to the furring strips? Or what is the correct method?

Attach 3/4" furring strips to studs with 4" screws.
