rigid insulation and fire code
Hello,
I want to use rigid insulation on the back of three attic access doors and on the attic side of some kneewalls per the link below someone provided me in a different thread.
http://www.eere.energy.gov/buildings/info/documents/pdfs/26447.pdf
My question is, what is the most appropriate type of rigid insulation for this application and what does fire code require given that this is a non-occupied part of the house (attic). Do they still have to be covered with drywall or plywood? On a search I saw someone mention a paint that could be applied to give it adaquate fire resistance?
Thanks,
Erik

You may want to look at Dow Thermax polyiso. I believe it is approved for use uncovered in crawlspaces--not sure about attics.
R-max has one product approved for exposed use.http://www.rmaxinc.com/Sheathing%20Products.htm#4"TSX-8500 is approved for exposed applications in some metal buildings, basement walls, agricultural, farm and light commercial structures. The panel side approved for the exposed use has a heavy 1.5 mil aluminum foil facer reinforced with glass fibers.".

Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
