Hi all. Attached some photos of windows I plan to trim with CVG fir – Craftsman style. I’m wondering what the concensus is out there when it comes to drywall returns. Do you cover them up or rip them out? The drywall returns are 4.5″ from the vinyl frame which is 3/4″ wide. So, I’m guessing a 1/2″ thick jamb would be look okay but a 3/16″ reveal would leave little meat to nail casing to jamb?
Anyway, appreciate all opinions.

I'd remove them myself.
If you live in a climate where window insulation and condensation is an issue, it would probably be best to rip out the returns. Gives you a chance to check the insulation and seal around the windows, and eliminates the rock near the windows, which could collect condensation in cold weather.

Yes indeed this is snow country in the winter and its always an effort to ensure ventilation is sufficient to keep condensation off the windows. You've given excellent considerations - thanks.
