Thad, check out Eldorado Stone. It is a synthetic that looks real good. goes up like mortar bed tile (actualy you hang it from the top down).
I attended a seminar on it a week or so before turkey day. My masonary supplier sponsored it, and now carries the product. I was the only carp./remodeler there, and did almost as well as the masons in attendance. My wife had a better "eye" for the layout thanthan most of the guys. Good tech. support also.

The veneer block can be found almost anywhere. I would use hardi board or dura-rock rather then board though. The board is not going to stand up to the block mortar.
Here's a couple of links.

Note: I researched these products for a project that hasn't been built yet so have no actual experience with them.
Just got done our first experiment with cultured stone. We used the Owens-Corning product. I have to say I was not thrilled at the idea, but it turned out very well. We used 1/2" Hardi-backer for the walls, and gave it a scratch coat before applying the stone. The scratch coat may have been overkill, but it worked like a charm.
From the brands I looked at, the Owens-Corning looked the most realistic, but the real way we made it turn out was by mixing from three different varieties of stone...and by having my mason lay it up. We also purposely over-ordered so that we could throw out any stones we didn't like.
This picture is before it was pointed...now that it is, I don't think anyone will ever know it is fake.
Compare Eldarado or Coronado to the Cultured Stone brand from Corning. The Corning stuff has noticeably better variety and detail.
