We are replacing some tiles around the deck of our roman tub, and I would like to also make a matching closeout panel in the front of the tub to match the surrounding tile. Of course I would like to be able to access the plumbing underneath if necessary, so would it be possible to epoxy some rare earth magnets from Rockler on the back of the hardiboard with the tile glued to the hardiboard panel? Has anyone ever done anything like this?
Using hardiboard scraps I was able to drill a counterbored hole on the back of the hardiboard where the magnets would be epoxied into the hole, but I don’t know if the epoxy will hold the magnets in place.
Thanks for the feedback

The magnets can be slippery, but you aren't going to be opening that hole up much. I did the same on my tub with WEDI instead of Hardi, then I caulked around the seam.
Gription......
The magnets have good gription, but to hold hardi and tile?............................maybe not.
Install a ledger board that will take the weight and maybe the magnets to keep it there.
