Has anyone ever seen a test of roof cements – the black roof shingle cements- the stuff usually in tubes for a caulk gun? Are they all the same or one or two brands better?
Is the neoprene stuff better than the traditional “black petroleum base” product?

thanks - it seemed to have a lot on the astm test standards but not a lot on someone who had compared brands
I tried..

"better" for what?
the neoprene caulk is for neoprene flashing on EPDM rubber roofs, but can also do the job of sticking shingles down against wind if you want to spend more money.
the bituminous works fine for shingles, but will eat a rubber roof alive, because EPDM and bitumin are not compatible

Main interest was, whats best for asphault home roofs and asociated flashing, not rubber roofs (which i think "fight Mother nature" and should be banned

Intersting you should say that, since fighting mother nature is exactly what a roof is supposed to do. =)

its aimed at flat roofs, not at "roofs'
most sloped roofs seem to work well- too many bad rubber flat roofs exist, which the archs seem to love- i do not know why-
Look here, BAD roofs leak - no matter what the pitch is.Good roofs don't - no matter what the pitch is.The steeper a pitch is, the more likely a bad roofer can get far enough away from the job to not get blamed, because it is less likely to be noticed, but it will still cause rot over time.I spent twenty years doing nothing but roofs, probably as many sq ft of flat as of pitched. The only reason for a roof leaking is poor craftsmanship or choice of materials to fit a budget instead of a job. I've heard what you are saying all my life and it is just plain bunk - a myth from those who know little about roofing.

But flat roofs are stoopid.http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
Looks that way. What kind of tar goop do YOU use for pitched roofs - you know, the "real" roofs?;)

I've never used any "goop". I've been using Geocel tube and brushable products for close to 20 years, but we've always just avoided situations that require "gooping". I can usually fold or solder my way out of most situations.
re: the original poster bitching about archy's designing flat roofs. There is some merit to that complaint. I've had several sets of plans handed to me that I just couldn't do a long term roofing solution as designed. More than once I've told an architect "Fine - we'll do it your way if you'll carry the warranty on it". That always get them to put their thinking caps back on. http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
In that there is plenty of truth, but the idea of outright condemning all flat roofs is just plain...goopy.
