I was up at my Uncles this weekend, he was pointing out some discoloration on his fairly new (1.5-2yr) asphalt shingle roof.
We were puzzled at what could be causing it so once again I turn to the wealth of knowledge here at Break time.
The flashing is lead and was not replaced with the new roof. To me it looks like rust but I can’t figure where it would be coming from, we did not have a tall enough ladder to check it out with at the time.
Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
*Please excuse me if my first photo post doesn’t turn out so well, I am trying to keep it small for easy opening but large enough to see details.

hummm let see if this photo is any better?
You say lead...
Any possibility that there "tin" under the lead?
The tar used on the flashing might be breaking down...

That’s what I am thinking at least about the tin. But as far as we know there is no tin up there, have to check it out.
Also if that is the source after getting rid of the tin or other source is there any type of chemical wash that would clean the stained shingles instead of replacing all of them?
Thanks guys
Gawd I hate the voids of cyberspace... This is the third time....
Tanin acid maybe another cause for the discoloration.. Wind blown vegitation may be hanging up on the upside of the chimney... A cricket is the repair for that... I won't take much to get the collective process started and fresh trash is always cycling in...
At this point I'll defer to Piffin.... Hopefully he'll catch the thread or you could put in a call to him... I'm outta guesses....
Cleaners are available at the big boxes... Time to read lables... I have no expericence with this leg of the journey..

Beats me. I'll go with the rotting detritus theory for now. Can't see any signs of rusting metal anywhere and the stain sreems to originate from the back/top side of the thing.

Is there an antennae or satellite dish mounted or a metal brace at the top of the stack where it doesn't show in the picture?

Pif...
If ya look at the bigger picture there appears to be stains originating down from the top..
You just may have it or maybe a SM cap dissoveling or rust from the mesh in a masonary cap stone bleeding thru / out...

both photos displayed the same size on my machine but I saved one and zoomed/clarified to see the stain. It does orginate from above at the back side where we can't see - Oh, let me turn the monitor around a sec....
Nope, still couldn't see the problem back there either.

I tried looking down from the top but the clarity isn't either....

The rust is traveling down the inside of the brick cavity and weeping out at the flashing..
Not all of the mortor lines are clean.......

It looks like it's running down the side of the chimney. It's visible on the right hand side towards the back. You'll have to get a ladder and get up there to locate the source.

I knew you guys would have some thoughts on this.
So far they are - Tin/metal rusting, Tar-Creosote, plants growing behind the chimney. oh and the flying Cat.
Well it looks like we're going to have to get a ladder up there soon and find the real reason behind it. But if it is one of the above what is the best route to get them clean besides replacing them. Some type of cleaner?
I think i got the solution fo the cat in my mind but I'll keep it to myself for you animal lovers.

I honestly expect that most of the things that would clean it will leave it looking uneven, like cleaner there than on the rest of the roof

Creosote based tar...
But....
for us not being there we seem to be doing okay..
Now go get the ladder and let us know what ya find....

I know this one.
This is caused by evil spirits.
The sure fire cure is to burn two winning lottery tickets, total value not less than $100,000 while hopping on one foot and naming the months of the year backwards. A sure thing this.
This either drives away the spirits or completely takes your mind off of the stains on the roof. One or the other. Possibly both.
Better than that, with a hundred grand, he can re-roof, build a new chimney, and still have enough left to give Imerc and i each twenty or thirty grand.
Then I'll jump up and down on one or both feet.

As Marty said, putting a cricket in on the "uphill" side of the chimney is a good idea in any event.
At first glance, it sure looked like the rust from galvanized sheet metal to me. But is could also be some sort of natural reaction, too. Like tree pollen building up on a hot roof getting "set" with an afternnon rain. or the like. But, that's a WAG.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Not growing... Wind blown matter sitting up there and releasing it's tanin acid...
