Hasp with a big honking padlock?
In our first old house, a brick rowhouse in Hoboken, NJ, there was a pair of brackets bolted to the lid, and another pair on the sides of the opening. A piece of 2x4 slid into all 4 brackets. Solid, & low tech, & cheap!
