can roof jacks be put on a roof that has already had the shingles applied? can I just lift up the tabs and nail the jacks underneath the shingles?

Like the fellas said... yup. Make sure your nails go into framing and not just the sheathing. Also try to find a spot to nail them that doesn't line up with a space in the shingles, this way you when you're done with your bracket, you just pull it and pound the nails into the shingles. Tar the flap back down and you're done. Pulling the nails just increases the risk of tearing the brittle shingles and doesn't serve much purpose. Just make sure they're not protruding at all.... nice and flush.
thanks guys. i appreciate the help.
Ok Ok, I'm missing something here. I assume you guys are talking about use on asphalt roof not cedar shake of shingle, right. And on a warm day too, so that the shingle wouldn't break. If it was shake then wouldn't you would have to pull the shake to attach the jack and then come back and reinstall a new shake?
Just trying to know everything gives me a headache!
