Roof Sheathing and Underlayment Ques?
What type (ring shank, smooth, etc.) and size of nails should be used for plywood or osb roof sheathing?
What is the purpose of those large gold round washer looking things that are placed over felt paper?
Is it better to use clips between sheathing even if the spacing is 16″ o.c.?
Thanks

If hand nailin I use 7D CC sinkers, gun I use 8D either ring or smoothe, depends what I have on hand.
The plastic caps are better for dry in felt and underlay than staples. They have more tear resistance.
If the 16 center is getting OSB, clips help when the osb is 7/16, but I don't see a necessity. At 24" you betcha they help more with the dips, and for that spacing alot of highend jobs have gone to 5/8th or 3/4" T&G. Clips are a PITA.

we use 8d vinyl coated sinkers or full-head gun nails for roof sheathing
large washers prevent staples from cutting through black felt paper in the wind, and it blowing off
H-clips with 16" o.c. spacing on 1/2" sheathing would be redundant

The tarpaper will tear off in a slight wind with roofing nails or staples only. Plasticap nails are the latest incarnation of a way to spread the stress and avoid tear out so the felt stays in place m,ore than a day or so. They might be green, yellow, red...sounds like you get gold.

No need at all to use clips 16" centers.
