I have a ten year old 3-tab shingle roof, with black shingles. I am now noticing
black streaking at various places on the roof, like dripping down. I looked at a spot
and didn’t notice anything unusual. What causes this?

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming

I live in central Va. It's the north side roof that is streaking. We have fairly
hot summers and not too bad winters. I've noticed it happ[ening to other houses
in my neighborhood, some with dimensional shingles (expensive).
Always happens on the North side . Doesnt matter what color but on white is the worst looking . Cedar blend seems the best to take it .
Since it happens on that side I tend to think it alge but its black in color.
Im interrested too .

sounds like mildew staining to me

Seems to be a more recent problem in this area ( Southern Maryland) My house has the original light grey shingles from 1978 and they all look very good for thier age, absolutely no streaking. Many of the houses in the neigborhood have had roofs replaced in the last 10 years or so, and the problem is showing up. You can drive up the street and see one house with streaks, and the one next door is clean ???
One of my customers is a roofer and he said that a few years ago ( 10 ?? ) the composition of the shingles changed. The problem started in that time frame. But he also said that the newest shingles have zinc, or some other particles in them that are supposed to prevent it.
I am getting ready to do the roof on my house and sure would like to get a definitive answer before buying materials.

It's algae. There are products that remove it at the big boxes. Clorox, mixed with water, also kills it (three parts water, one part clorox). In newer shingles, zinc and copper particles on the shingles leach when it rains and keep it from growing.
