I think I’m what you call a lurker. I read every post but dont write a lot..
I’ve done my fair share but dont do a lot of roofing anymore. Im doing the In-Laws roof this weekend in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Small roof. 10 Sq. Architecturals. One side is a 9 pitch with 2 small gable dormers, the other is a lower pitched shed dormer with 2′ of rake on either side.
The roof will not be exposed to only the underlayment for any length of time.
I will Ice & Water the valleys, eaves, rakes and ridge… I Usually use 30# felt as underlayment but my lumberyard salesman recommended I try Interwraps Titanium UDL. $140 roll covers 10 Sq. It’s a lot lighter, durable, tear resistant, easier to walk on etc…
The Titanium UDL will probably be twice as expensive than using tar paper. The roof is pretty small and there will be a good percentage of Grace ice & water on it so the Titanium UDL maybe be too much for too little. I will never cheap out on anything and I am all for trying new products but I am trying to save the in-laws a buck or two 😉
Should I stick to the tar paper or go for the sytnthetic roofing underlayment option? Anybody have any experience they wish to share?
Thankyou.

10 square. Man, after you ice & water the eaves, valleys, rakes and ridge, don't seem like you would need much underlayment, lol.
I would save the bucks and use tar paper. You said you don't roof much anymore, what ya gonna do with leftover specialty roofing underlayment?

Yeah, that was one of my points... Just wanted to see if anybody had any real great reasons i should go with it. Thanks.
I posted earlier on a similar subject. I feel confident that a liberal use of the ice and snow (whatever you call it) underlayment where there's water or ice (eaves, valleys, etc.) would be sufficient. I think that 80% of the cost of a good roof is the talent of the people installing it and that 80 % of its endurance might be the same. So, exotic underlayments where not needed might not have the same return.
their benefit lies in being able to weather longer exposure better than felt and also being faster to install due to larger rolls.
neither of these are a benefit to you.

The main advantage of it would be the tear resistance, but if you can get this re-roofed before any major storms come up, there is no need for it. The other adantage is easier to walk on, but you should not be trying to walk a 9/12 anyway

Timkline - I'll have it stripped and roofed in a day and a half. It wont be exposed for any amount of time.Piffin - There will be not cartwheels but walking up and down a 9 pitch comfertably isn't a problem for me. Also I have all the appropriate roofjacks, lanyards and harnesses. Thanks for the responses. I think I'll stick with the tar paoer!
day and a half?you do pretty well for not doing much roofing anymore!

This is a bit off the subject, but did anyone see the Ask This Old House show recently where Tommy installed a solar powered roof fan/vent?
I was surprised because when he tore off the shingles to install it there was nothing undeneath the shingles except plywood. I would have thought that would not meet code.
NC didn't require any felt under 6/12 or over at least as late as 1994, when I left there.
Me and one more guy with the father in law on the ground. Day and a half to 2 days easy. Don't do a lot of roofing anymore but I've not forgotten anything!

Sorry - I figured this was the thread. What's probably happened is that someone posted to you in the thread, then the thread got deleted by the mods before you could read it. I have the same problem with #89475 right now.The SYSOP has said before that there's nothing you can do about it. The link times out in about 90 days, and the problem will go away. Until it happens again, of course. It happens to me about twice a year, it seems.
