If a roof is vented at the ridge and soffit, is it wrong to also install gable end vents. We had a long and over analysized discussion on this today at work, carpenter BS mostly, but the overall consenses was if a roof vents from soffit through ridge, then the gable vents will through off the balance of ventness. I argue that more ventilation the better. Anyone have an opinon on this matter?

The air will follow the path of least resistance, so yes, a gable vent could negate the soffit flow.

you be wrong on this one. if you add gable to the system what happens is the air flows out the ridge and the makeup air comes in the unrestricted closer gable vent instead of the soffit venting way down lower and tighter

The general consensus of those who have considered the problem (and I think this includes advice from the ridge vent companies) is that gable vents, when installed in an already adequately vented roof, "short circuit" the airflow and prevent even ventillation.
Understood, thanks for the replies.
