Personally,
I can't imagine a phone call I would LESS want to recieve than that one
and assuming i HAD that information ----------why on earth would I divulge it to random phone callers?????????

He needs the work. He is a survivor of hurricane Ivan and lost a leg and his house, he subs out the roofing to a few good guys. Finally getting his bizness back on solid ground. I worked with him as sub for 3-4 yrs, and he and I were recently talking about available work, it's getting slim dowm there in parts of the counties I mentioned.
I figure if this HO is nearby, a phone call with details is a LOT faster than a slew of posts that will result in not much more than a WAG anyway. Why waste time when there may be a quick ez way to get it accomplished?
Someof the homes I have worked on down there were stepladder to soffit on one side, 40' ladder on a deck 30' off the ground on the other..it can be REAL STEEP depending on the zip code.
Lets see, some gated communities were built in the 60s'-70's with cedar shake roofs, and now any NEW roof MUST BE cedar or approved Archies..no other options. Again, this guy knows which ones and how to bid it. He's been doing it there for 20 yrs. Fla. before that. An MANY HO's in WNC are transplants from Fla. they share a common denominater and believe it or not , Fla HO's either want a "redneck" for free, or a fellow Floridian at going rate. I lived there long enough to know I'd not ever be either of them.

sphere,
i don't know if you have ever got calls like this---
but i get calls periodically from people who read a back issue of FHB--- and call my home thinking I want to spend my free time discussing their roofing dilemma 3 states away--or want to second guess a proposal from their local contractor all i know-- is that I can see why the OP might want that info---but i have no idea why i would want to supply it to him.
Best wishes,

Stephen,
You seem awfully hard nosed about this topic. I'm much more like Duane in that I'd gladly give advice to those who would seek me out either in the grocery store on the way home , or by phone.
I can't possibly do all the work that people would like me to , so a little free advice or help selecting someone else to complete their task is only fair.
Seems when you give something away , even if it's free advice or hand holding it comes back in spades.
I agree the OP didn't give enough info to truly help him , but I thought the spirit of this Forum was to help if you could or wanted to.
Best regards, Walter
"gladly give advice"ya - but....I'll answer any 'INFORMED' question on fruit growing as well as I am capable - but not a week goes by that I don't asked multible times 'when do you spray apple trees?' or 'why did my tree die?' or 'how.....?'I particularly note the late night/early morning/mealtime phone calls - not even going to buy anything, but think I should be able to diagnose their issue over the phone and owe them a simple answer that is easily implemented after the fact and must be convenient - hey - if they utilize their own initiative and consult a book, visit a library, get a publication from the extension service, or use the internet, and then have a question about their research, I'm happy to answer - otherwise I'll brush 'em off, not gently if they exhibit real stupidity - the OP did not ask an 'informed' question - "there's enough for everyone"
Why'd my tree die? Oh wait. I've got your phone #. I'll call later and ask.View Image
David, we share some of the same sensibilities --maybe it's the beards !!
I didn't mean to imply that every stupid question is answered in great detail , only that I'm willing to help when I can. I won't take calls after 8;30 though.
Most are face to face from folks stopping on my jobsite some are nice jobs I'll take and schedule and others are given some names and advice and perhaps a Shutterfly album for instruction.
Mood -- theirs -- has everything to do with how much help is given or either if it's correct in certain severe cases.
Walter
walter,
i honestly think sphere is being unfair to the guy whose name and phone number he gave out over the internet. If you- or sphere------- lived in--say OHIO :>) and you started getting calls from people in New York, New Jersey, Vermont etc( like I have)---and those out of state callers- who you are NEVER going to meet---want you to give up your free time to diagnose THEIR problems over the phone--------
well- you might view the situation differently. sphere is living in a log cabin, gawd knows where- and maybe he is lonesome for company--- i don't critisize him for his location--or him for moving from place to place to place--------but apparently he has a problem with my commitment to living and workin in the same neighborhood, serving the same customers for 20 plus years. i know i mention it too much-- but if i spend 20 some years taking care of customers in a 10-12 block radius-- i can't really be the guy sphere whould portray me as--can I?-- it's enough for me to take care of the locals- i don't have time for people in New Jersey--especially on my dime
If sphere does- more power to him---but those out of state/free advice calls are a large part of why i haven't voluntarily answered a ringing phone in several years.
Best wishes,
stephen

i rarely leave my neighborhood.
a call from a couple COUNTIES away??
forgetaboutit!!!!! I accept that we have different view-- i can see that your impulse was that you were doing a guy a favormy view is--that you might have un-knowingly boned the guy you thought you were doing a solid. THAT is why i made my comment--- because it seemed like you had never considered that alternative viewBest wishes,

You have grossly mis catagorized me and why I am living in "Gawd Knows where" or why I am here..what the hell is up with that? Why do you care?
Oh yeah, and BTW, I CAN still service my past customers that are a 4 hour drive away, I frequently return to visit family and customer friends..you make it sound like I abandoned my past or something and you are a hero because you still live in the same house for ever..WTF?

different viewpoints sphere-- that's all i pointed out. i am sorry you feel that way-because different viwpoints are the most valuable part of breaktime. it's inconcievable to me that i would even WANT to have customers 4 hours away---but it doesn't mean i can't learn something from somebody who does. i am kind of suprised that you or walter didn't read what i wrote and at least briefly think" hey-- i didn't consider THAT possibility"
at any rate-as always- best wishes to you,
stephen
I mean no harm.
I do have a wayyyyy differnt view. I have worked in Alabama, while living in PA. YUP, Sept to Jan was my job, then Chicago, Then Princton NJ.. even the Virgin Islands, when you build organs, you work at the church after you build it. It is not uncommon even HERE t work in 3 or 4 counties surrounding me, and Grant is even in another county, and about 30 miles away.
Down there in NC Mtns. Almost every trade travels either across the county or in another , "live in the woods, work in the woods, but go up hill to get the money"
I don't miss neighbor hoods, nor traffic, nor anything like what you have posted of your abode and location..we's just different brother..and here we are..and truly,I love the way I have traveled and worked all over the US in various fashions, but coming home, is where ever I hang my hat.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Hey - I'm gonna hijack this sissyboy slap fight.
Remember our buddy Tom down in Estill Co? He called me a couple of wks ago from the VA hospital. He'd had a heart attack, his kidneys had shut down and his liver was giving up the ghost. They didn't give him much chance of leaving the hospital alive and told him it was too late for a kidney transplant.
I've been staying in touch with him and he's been rapidly improving. Last Sat morning he called me and said they thought he might get to go home in a couple of weeks if he kept improving.
He called me from home this morning. He's dodged another bullet. Says he got the wake up call and has given up what he needed to give up. View Image
Ah hell, this ain't no fight, we's genteel about it..LOL
Man, that both suxx and is good news for him. I like him a lot, just kooky enough to be fun, but not crazy. I got his # here in my wallet, I may give him a shout.
I don't why them wake up calls come so damm late for some folks, that was close for sure.

I think we are on the same page. And I completely agree with David here, about the content of the question, it was vague, but it just so happens my buddy is more than happy to weed out the tire kickers and guide the blind..like I said, differnt strokes for different folks and all that.
Doubt I could ever repay all the "freebies" I've rec'd, some of them are people now deceased, so, I give it to someone else deserving..or just sometimes for the hell of it, pay it forward.

BTW walter??
it is a rare trip to the gas station or the library or the grocery store or church when I am NOT stopped by a previous customer or a prospective customer I can't cut my own grass without someone stopping to ask for something and if my wife is with me( she teaches at the local school 4-5 blocks away)-well forget about it.
so it's not a matter of being hard-nosed- it's a matter of survival and sanity it's not about being un-freindly-- it's about not having my good nature abused, LOLVery best wishes, copper flashing on Luddiwicci tile roof today--no pictures
stephen
Keep your camera with you. We'd love to see pictures of nice roofing situations.
I wasn't referring to cross Country calls , but I see what you mean there. In the local area I field a lot of questions too , but like David posted earlier if they are too demanding I can make it quite clear that my limit has been exceeded.
I learned some of my soldering techniques from an older man who worked on several jobs I was also on. He would turn and try to shield what he was doing so that I couldn't see well - possibly not wanting to help the younger generation learn the roofers art.
I thought at the time that was quite petty , since he couldn't help folks after he retired. I vowed that if I became proficient I wouldn't shy away from helping the new folks. I'm 57 now so I can't go more than another 20 - so if I can help someone who has an interest I'll try to help.

So Walt, I will be over to visit, where did you say you were working?>G<
188 Broadway in Bangor Maine Bring coffee please ,cream two sugars.
Across town from S. King
I recall a story by Roy Underhill about a saw sharpener that visited a woodshop he worked at..the guy would do as you said, hunker over and be secretive. About all the workers would gawk and steal a peek, except for one guy who acted like he didn't care.
When everyone went to lunch, the saw guy took the cab maker aside and said " here, kid..this is how ya do it, and don't you even think of showing them bastids what we are doing here".
Kinda the same. It's the old "How'd ya do that?" "well, if I told ya, I'd have to kill ya"..LOL
I too can get tired of "shareing" too much..but generally I follow my heart, if it's not into the "moment", I stop doing whatever I am doing..keeps the BP in check (G). And I know, my next phase will be in providing instruction of some sort..why not? I can't take a lifetime of exp. with me in the next go round, or I'd have nothing to learn and a lot to unlearn.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

In the Macon area there is https://www.apexroofingga.com/
Sullivan,
I'm not anywhere close to NC, but you haven't given enough information for anyone to provide a useful answer.
Is this residential or commercial?
One, two, three stories high?
What is the access to the project?
What is the pitch of the roof?
What is the existing roof?
How many squares?
Are we installing f/g shingles or something else?
Are there valleys, hips, ridges, skylights? etc. etc. etc.
Even with all that info. you may not get a good answer.
I have been dumb enough to shingle a new roof for $30/square labor, and have gotten as much as $500/square labor for tear-off and replacement on a small, difficult access, cut-up roof.
You cannot convey tone in an email.
I will do it for $2000/square!
clearly you are a tar-bucket johnny.
everybody knows the going rate is $3000/sq.-- why do you hate american capitalism????,
LOL
Best wishes,
stephen
I can't tell you what it will cost up front, first I have to tell you how the money is divided after you sign the contract.
The owner gets 40% for owning the company, and setting up the dummy corporation that he subcontracts the installations to...
The salesman that works on straight commission gets 20%...
The buddy who (on paper) owns the corporation that subcontracts all the installations gets 20%...
The guy that owns the truck and ladders, and has a handyman's insurance policy because he just does miscellaneous "home repairs" gets 20%, and so that he can afford to feed his family on that small amount he hires undocumented workers and pays them in cash at a piece rate to do the actual installation of the shingles...
And even they have their hierarchy as the lead guy will average about 8 per hr and the lumpers will get about 5 pr hr. Of course they don't have to pay tax, so its not that bad...
So because of all the overhead costs in roofing its about $100 per square, or about $20,000 for the job.
That was helpful.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Do you think?
Watched the movie the other night, Charlie Wilsons War.
Story in the movie about the zen master and the little boy.
the boy is from the wealthiest family in town and so when he gets a horse for his birthday everyone in town says oh how nice, we will see says the zen master.
the boy falls off the horse and breaks his leg everyone in town says oh how terrible, we will see says the zen master.
a year later there is a war all the men in the town go off to fight it and the boy who broke his leg cannot go how lucky everyone says, we will see says the zen master.
My story might prevent the OP from hiring a shyster contractor, but we will see.
I read that ( but with a slight twist) in the book " A New Earth" recently. Funny how that works.
While everyone else was yucking it up on new poster's entrance, I was offering a suggestion that may have had results, vs. blathering ( me included) about the flawed approach here, and subsquent scutiny of my philosophy of ask and recieve.
Must be the elections getting everyone in a tither.

You may want to look at roofers in Macon who have awards and accreditations for price checks.
Not only do they have assurances from happy customers, but https://www.apexroofingga.com/ are also backed up by a number of organizations that have recognized our superb work in and around the local Macon area.
