the nail has to penetrate the deck at least 3/4 inch..
our standard nail for new work is 1 1/4 inch... plus 1/4 inch for overlay.. so you need an 1 1/2 inch nail...
if your shingles are special thickness (as in a 25 year architectural shingle ) you should add a 1/4 inch to both of those dimensions....
most of the instructions will not tell you how long the nail is, only the amount of penetration....
if you have any exposed roof deck (visible below) you should experiment and use the longest nail that does not show...
b but hey, whadda i no ?

I was hoping to get away with 1 3/4 nails so I could use a coil nailer.

Ed,
Go with 1 1/2". You don't need anything longer with your situation (of course the caps should use 1 3/4").

*My understanding from manufacturers instructions are that the nail has to penetrate the sheathing completely. This doesn't mean just the point. The full shank of the nail has to penetrate the sheathing. This gives you the maximum "grip" of the nail by the sheathing. Any additional pentrationpenetratione of money *in my opinion*.For what it's worthTim
*I guess no one else is going to mention tearing off the original roof so i won't either. Skip
*Me neither... it will just generate another thread where 23,612 of us recommend the tear-off and 3 say to leave the old shingles in place.Where ya' been, Skip?Steve
*Would that be 23,612 guys who aren't regularly doing the tear-offs,paying for the tear-offs,or warranting the tear-offs? Or just the the 23,612 guys who will post an answer to any question asked and have never seen a topic they wouldn't offer expert advice on.I think I see a post down here that requires me to rewire the house with my left hand, while simultaneously installing hardi-plank outside with my right.(I will install that crown molding in the living room on my lunchbreak)Ain't life grand? Stephen
*> 23,612 of us recommend the tear-offI've told you guys a million times not to exaggerate............
