I’m building a new home with SIP walls and roof in Northern Virginia. Has the controversy over putting asphalt roofing shingles directly over the SIP (a so called Hot Roof) been resolved? I understand that some (maybe all) shingle manufacturers won’t warrant their roofing material over SIP unless an air space for venting is provided. This seems to defeat one of the advantages of SIP. Instead of saving construction time you now have to build a roof over a roof.
Is it OK to roof directly over SIP?
Does anyone know of manufacturers that will fully warrant their roofing shingles when placed directly over SIP?

In the past, we have strapped the roof w/ 2x's and re -sheathed it. I beleive ELK will warranty their 50 yr shinlges over unvented roof decks however.

There is no Elk any more. They were bought by GAF a couple of years ago and the ELK name is about phased out.http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
few deny warrantee coverage because of installation over an unvented roof.
The amt the materials age in tests from higher temps is equivalent to a few months of life service, meaning that when they wear out eventually, you might need to reroof in spring instead of that fall. It is inconsequential.

I talked to an engineer that has done many sip homes in Calif. and he said there is no problem .I think Premier has a vented panel for roofs .
In kindness - Why would you spend the $ on SIPs and not bother to put on a metal roof? So many advantages and worth every $.
As such you wouldn't have to worry about a shingle warranty.

Certainteed shingles are warranted for this application and have a good mildew resistance that is key in a humid place like the south east.
