I’m putting a new roof on a garage. I got some angled supports to use for staging. They sit at a 45 degree angle (the roof is 10/12) and I’ll run a 2×8 across a pair of them to stand on. Evidently one uses 20d nails to attach them to the sheathing & rafter. My question is: Is there a trick for nailing under the shingles to attach the supports to prevent leaks later & do I drive the nails home after moving the staging or pull them out? Thanks for your advice.

Never used nails that big but if it says you should...I guess you should.
tuck the nail up under the next course in line with the rest of the nails in that shingle. And just drive the nail in when you're done.
*Then go under the roof and cut off that nail when you're done. No surprises later.
*Another way of saying what Ryan said: Lift up one of the 3 12" tabs of the shingle and drive the nail as high up under the tab as you can get w/o breaking or ripping the shingle and drive the nail perpandicular to the roof and as close to the middle of the 5" tab as you can; stop with about 1/4" of the nail still to go and hang the bracket; then pound the nail in the rest of the way, but don't set it hard( so you can get the bracket back out). After removing bracket, set the nail.
*Yeah I know a 20d seems like quite the spike, hence my concern for permanently venting my roof.
*Thanks for the advice. As soon as this rain stops (by July?) I can button it up.
*I am considering installing a metal roof on a new home (40'x 48'). should I put the rafters 2' o.c. (to conserve materials) with 1x4 strips to secure the roof? Should I be concerned with condensation under the metal. if so what method and material should I use to prevent condensation, if the problem exists? I am planning on building the home on concrete footings and cinder blocks, utilizing 6"x6" beams as sills, on 8' centers (or 12'?). I have gotten several different opinions on footing sizes. the house design is a single floor plan. I live in the south and freezing/frost line is not an issue. some say the footing should be 24"x24"x24" deep. others say I can use 24"x24"x 6 to 8" deep. Any suggestions? Thanks
*Jim,20d nails do seem big but remember that they are holding you up. As the others have said, just put them in under the tab above and drive them down after you remove the bracket. If it makes you feel better, put some roofing cement over the heads to seal them up before laying the tab down for good.
*Do you not put the riggers on before you nail the next row of shingles then when you move them you bang the bottom of them and they slide out and you bang the nail down. The nail is only up by about a 1/4 " and the shingle above will cover the hole.
