While installing a bathroom exhaust vent on my roof, the roofer noticed that several of the vent pipe boots were loose. He drove a few nails around each boot through the shingles. I believe he also put some chaulking over the nails.
Is this normal practice for a home in the north east? I thought all nails should be covered by the next course of shingles. I’m also concerned about how well the chaulk was able to set – about half an hour after the work was complete, it began to rain steadily for more than 36 hours.
Thanks for your help.

every once in a while you have to use an exposed nail...
your roofer did the right thing.. and he also did the right thing with the "caulk" on top of the exposed nail head.. it was probably roofing cement in a caulk tube.. and the rain won't hert that a bit

Common practice Rick, I would not worry about it.

Well, did you experience any leaks? Relax Rick...he did nothing wrong.
