I am in need of a rotary hammer drill. I need a heavy duty unit. I have seen spline drives and SDS drives. Which one is this best, and why? I am going to be drilling 8″ to 10″ deep holes in my foundation about 5/8″ in dia. I don’t know anything about these types of drills. Any help would be appreciated.

One house? Rent the unit. These are expensive, and the bits are not cheap, either. Be interested in what you need a 5/8 hole 10 inches deep for. Epoxy, maybe?, or expansion bolts?
if this is a retrofit to anchor the floor to the foundation, keep in mind how much room you have to stand the tool up in the stud bay. The sds max units are typically taller than others.
you also might save yourself a trip by renting a rebar cutting bit at the same time.
I think a recent issue of fhb had a long look at these tools...
*Sam,If you will be in any kind of tight spaces or awkward positions drilling your retrofit holes, get a short SDS drill (buy or rent) with a pistol grip. The D-handle units are nice, but too long for a lot of retrofit access situations. Bosch makes one, the 11234, for about $180 in Tool Crib of the North. Or get the Metabo 6021 for around $260 and get a really nice tool that will drill circles around the Bosch. For 5/8" holes you do not really need the size and weight of the big (spline or SDS-max) drills. The regular SDS bits are also much less expensive, as are the tools, and probably also the rental fees.Bill
