About ten years ago my neighbor installed a wrought iron fence between our two houses all on his dime. In addition he had a double door gate setup installed so he could park his boat in his back yard. Over the years the fence has almost rusted into oblivion, and the gate has a lot of surface rust. The installer told him that the iron was powder coated. No recourse is available from the installer until he gets out of jail on an unrelated conviction having nothing to do with his fine skills in iron work.
My neighbor is going to replace the fence and has asked me to handle the project for him. So could anyone jump in with some ideas of how to do this right to avoid the same deterioration? The lawn sprinklers do not hit this fence or the gates. We live in the low desert area of Sunny Southern California, so any moisture comes from what is in the air or the 1/4” of rain we get each year.

I don't think much of powder coating for outside stuff myself. It hides rust. Obviously he had steel, not wrought iron due to the rust. Real wrought iron does not rust so bad.
Perhaps he can go with an aluminum product this time.
You are right, it is steel. I will research the aluminum idea. I didn't know that was even available. Thanks.
