I’m about ready to replace the feeder from the house to the shop, in order to be able to run 220 tools in the shop. The 110 cable presently runs on the outside of the house near the top of two walls before aerially travelling the 70 feet or so to the shop. (Although I’d like to bury it there’s just too much concrete in the way.)
My understanding is that I cannot use SEU or SER for the aerial run, and I shouldn’t use triplex for the portion running along the house–I presume because of the exposed neutral. Would there be any reason I couldn’t use quadruplex for the entire run, thereby enclosing (insulating?) the neutral, with only the ground bare?
Otherwise it seems I need to splice SEU to triplex ? (I don’t believe I need the ground in this run as there will be a ground rod at the shop.)
Thanks.

what size service are you planning on? need more info..
60 A.Thanks.
It's been a loong time since I have run any aerial, however attaching overhead cable to a structure simply is not done ....
you need to install conduit from the panels to a weatherhead at both buildings ....and pull-offs ...the pull-off will attach through the wall ..... not to the conduit, unless the conduit is large enough ,vertical, and securely fastened to the walls, to handle the sideload of 70' of swaying cable. these things are galvanized pin & clevis hardware welded to ####long thread bolt, you might get away with the "lag" style for the smaller drop.. then you will need two strain relief "chicken legs" , these will be installed onto the bare neutral and hooked around the pin of the pull-off, you will have to maintain the vertical clearance required and allow enough droop in your cable for seasonal changes ...then simply check for grounds or shorts...make all your splices properly,....you will have Al/Cu connections , check for grounds or shorts again , get the inspection and you are good to goof course your local codes might not allow it ..............but you will find that out when you pull the permit......
