Does anyone know the requirements to take the journeyman electrician exam in New Jersey? How many years exp, education, etc. Is this something that must be done through the IBEW – or can you gain what is necessary working for a non-union electrical contractor?
I found the requirments for an electrical contractors license, but that’s not what I’m looking for.

I would think you could find that information on your state Housing,Building and Construction web site or whoever the licensing authority is there.
Although I am an IBEW member, and as much as they would like it, I know of no state that requires a union membership to become a licensed journeyman electrcian.
Generally the requirements needed to take the test are defined in terms of hours worked as a helper, and apprentice. Here in KY it use to be possible to go to a trade school and then just take the journeyman test. You could then get a job as a journeyman if you could convince an electrical contractor that you could do the work (with no experience...you bet buddy). You could not pull a permit and in several counties you could only work under the supervision of someone with a masters license. All of that has changed now, for the better IMHO.
You might also check some of the trade schools in the state, as well as non union contractors for thier apprenticeship programs. If you are starting from ground zeroe, expect at least 4000 man hours of OJT to reach the threshold for the journeyman test. It could be more.

I've heard this question before.
I'm not positive, but it is my understanding that in New Jersey you are either a licensed electrician(electrical Contractor) or you aren't . No middle ground.
May be different now, but that's how it was.
Here in PA we have some system of "Low Voltage" "Appliance Installer" " Journyman" and "Master" testing.
"I'm not positive, but it is my understanding that in New Jersey you are either a licensed electrician(electrical Contractor) or you aren't . No middle ground."That makes sense. I looked all over the licensing board's web site & all I could find was information on a contractor's license, no journeyman exam info.Anyway, I'm starting trade school next semester (at nights). I hope I can convince an E.C. that I know what I'm doing (or at least that there would be a minimal learning curve). I don't expect that anyone will put me on my own immediately w/o knowing me from Adam, but I've held employment (in the computer field) for the past 12 years (including 8 on my current job). Hopefully that counts for something.I've done alot of electrical work (all inspected) on my own homes over the years (both old & new work). I'm 34 years old & have a Math degree (including courses in Physics & electrical theory). I'm looking to make a career shift.
Where are you located? North or South Jersey?
South Jersey ~10 miles from Atlantic City.
in TN if you can pass the test you get your lic... plumber electrican ect... in arkansas i believe you can still become a lawyer without law school... they call it "reading the law" if you can pass you get your ticket...
