Just found a bucket of tools that must have been left in the rain and then put in the shop wet last fall. The @#%$#@$# @#$@@# @#$#@# of #%$%% is no longer with me but the rust lingers, light to heavy any ideas beside oil and a wire brush?
Thanks in advance

5 gallon bucket of kerosene and wire wheels, brushes. Get most off, then PB Blaster for the stuck operating parts.
Not much else works any better.

pb blaster?
Liquid wrench type penetrating oil in a spray can, auto parts stores and Lowes carries it. REALLY good stuff, I just freed up some hyd. jacks that were frozen up real bad.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
I have had success with Evapo-Rust. It is sewerable, and takes light rust off fast, and deep rust within 24 hrs. I think a gallon is about $20. Google it. In my last project, I built a box with some scrap lumber that fit the items I wanted to de-rust. I lined it with some 6 mil PE, added the parts, and covered them with the product. Next day, I took them out to the driveway and sprayed them off. They were clean.
I let them dry in the sun. Then, to curb further rusting, I brushed on some clean product.
I've seen (on the web) examples of a product called Ultra one. If it works as good as they say it is it would be great.

Does Naval Jelly still exist? That used to be the standard treatment.

get some oxy clean, pour couple table spoon in the bucket, fill with water. hook all the metal tools together with jumpers. hook to battery charger. hook the other contact to a piece of scrap steel, make sure it not touching the other metal. come back in couple days, they be spotless and the paint still be good.
use lye instead...
faster...

OK , I'll bite .if a battery charger works, would a welding machine get it one faster, dial the volts waaay down and crank the amps way up.. or would it just eject the caustic all over the placejust don't know if the welder would blow a fuse.

you want a reverse electrolisis type effect.....
never tried a welder....

Electroplating uses around 20VDC and little or no amps....

hmmm,I remember running busbar for very high currents like around 2K and very low single digit voltages.
.
.. . . . . . . .
Depends on a variety of factors and what one is trying to accomplish with the plating. Both are used. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroplating I remember that too high a amperage would cause "burn" and over deposit on the highlights of a piece being plated and sometimes they would have to be stripped and re-plated at lesser amperage.
Sometimes the "burn" could be polished off with satisfactory results.

How do you clean your saw blades? Mine go into the lye bucket, get their teeth brushed, rinse, and dry. Quick and easy.PAHS works. Bury it.
you have to clean saw blades ??? :)I thought they were just dull, since I don't use mine all the time I use that Boeshield stuff.
.
.. . . . . . . .
Yup, leave 'em covered with pitch and they'll get dull.
that reminds me of an episode of Mythbusters.
One of the guys tried using electrolosis to corode some metal bars but was using AC.... so in efect he would dissolve some metal and then attach some metal as the curret alternated.
Had to use DC to get the desired effect.

the scrap metal is postive
Citric acid works pretty well. As in a bottle of lemon juice and a bucket of water.
Just restored an old plane and some ship auger bits that way and was pretty surprised. You'll probably want to hit it with a green scouring pad just to make sure, but honestly 98% of the oxidation disappears thanks to the reaction.
One word of caution, when you take the tools out of the mix, don't let them sit around before you wipe them down and dry them off. They'll flash rust. A hair dryer works well to prevent that.

Muriatic acid was the key to naval jelly. It's used to do something to hot tubs, so it's commercially available. Make sure you oil the daylights out of anything you use it on.
I'm pretty certain that the active ingredient in naval jelly is phosphoric acid, not muriatic (hydrochloric) acid. Dilute phosphoric is the expedient way to cut iron oxide.
You are correct, sir! Also the active ingredient in Lime Away and Coca Cola. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphoric_acidNothing would be done at all if a man waited till he could do it so well

Not muriatic acid, but phosphoric acid, IIRC
Naval Jelly, tomato sauce, or Kool-Aid.
