I have a Unisaw which has a great deal of power. I was cutting some 0.25 inch plastic and had a piece fly back and hit me in the leg. I still have the scar. It could have been a lot worse.
I am looking for a heavy duty leather apron to protect me. Can anyone suggest a source? Does anyone wear a similar precaution?

check under 'farrier supplies' local farm store or google, bestest tough leather.
Welding supply? They use tough leather to weld in.
If you want to go the medieval route, try chain mail. Don't let the weight get you down, though.
Ummm... why did you get a piece of plastic flying at you? If the fence is adjusted properly, the right blade, and you're feeding correctly, you shouldn't have had a problem. If it was a miter guage, you should have been using a sled. One nice thing about a Unisaw is they don't have much vibration. My last employer had a ¼" sheet of plywood come flying at him. Scared the crap out of him, but it wasn't the saw's fault.
Only time I use armor is when I put something unstable in my lathe, knowing I'm taking a risk.

Good point. Every once in a while, though, when you least expect it...
When my son wanted to work in the shop around the tools (not with them, that was a few years down the road) I set up a demonstration. With the table saw running and both of us off to the side, I tossed a scrap on the spinning blade. It shot across the shop, gouged beyond belief. Sonny's eyes were WIDE when he saw the scrap. He still wants nothing to do with the table saw, or radial arm. Works on the band saw all day, though. Had to tell him I saw a guy cut his thumb off on a bandsaw, not watching where his fingers were when the blade passed through the edge of the wood.
Being alert and using some common sense should prevail. But a good helping of respect is always a good thing.
I never met a tool I didn't like!
At the lumberyard I buy from they have a nice shop. The tablesaw is positioned about twelve feet from an exterior door which is usually open. A good fifteen or twenty feet from the door is another building with steel siding. The steel has clearly been hit hard on more than one occasion.
Don't stand in the doorway while something is being cut.
