The last of our five 20-year old cats died last week. (Sob !) I’m ripping out 2200 square feet of once fine BC carpet (Before Cats) and replacing it with Satillo tile, corner to corners (baths excepted). No more animals (but me) allowed indoors.
The prominent entry area and connecting walkway to one end of the house is tiled with an original, brown tone stained, concrete tile, which I plan to keep. I’ll strip that tile and then try to match or compliment the result. I plan to stain and one coat seal the Saltillo before laying and seal both tile and grout afterward with additional coats.
For anyone who has worked with Saltillo tile, here are my questions:
Oil or water base stain? Advantages and disadvantages? Premixed or powder?
Oil or water base sealer?
Any brand recommendations?
I’d like to spray the stain and sealer with an HVLP. If that sounds like a good, lazy idea, should I also back-brush the sprayed coats?
Me and myself have laid a good bit of stone tile and ready-to-go Saltillo before (way before) so fading muscle memory tells me this project looms large for my 64-year old body. I need to get the stain and sealer right the first time, since that’s the only one happening. For max feedback, I’m posting over at John Bridge forum also. Thanks for your knowledge and experience. I’m off to rip and dump, so I’ll be gone for a while.
