i have wraparound porch, appr. 80 years old, t&g woodfloor is in pretty good shape, i want to sand my floor and then prime and paint it. its 500 square feet , to have it sanded by a pro its 500 dollars, i could rent a floorsander from home depot and do it myself, but i never used a floorsander before, what would you do, doing it myself would save me about 300 bucks, but it probably wont look as good. i always value your opinion

Well
The first time I sanded a floor it was the first time.........(of course). So long ago, I think it turned out pretty good. Seem to remember I probably could see the places where I stopped short of the wall, eventho I was trying to be carefull.
So, what better place to start learning.
You'll need an edger also.
500 sf is not small.
Assuming you're using a drum sander, try and get one that has a lifting arm to raise the drum-way easier than those you tip up and let down.
If you're sanding paint-it'll clog us several belts.
Best of luck.
Sanding Porch floor
I have aPorter Cable drywall sander I use for doing this kind of floor sanding. I have sanding discs for it in 40 to 220-grit. and it is much less agressive than a floor sander.
The dust pickup on it is excellent. The tool rental centers at some HomeDesperates have them for rent.
