A friend of mine did some demo at a local mall and pulled out lots of recessed cans (about 50 of them, most of them 12v eyeball fixtures, some line voltage – all about $50 a pop). Unfortunately, he didn’t get the mounting frames and he cut the BX feed to the junction box.
I’d like to use some of these fixtures as soffit and front porch ceiling lights. I was thinking about tossing the little BX tail that is on them now, punching a romex clamp hole in the housing and using the housing as the junction box. The bulb socket is attached to the trim piece, so I could easily just wire them up and push the trim into the housing. The splices would always be easily accessible by just pulling the trim head. Makes me wonder why they don’t do it this way to begin with.
Anybody see an issue with this approach?

Two things I can think of.
If 12V then he left the transformers behind, you have to supply new transformers. You cannot wire the romex into the housing, the temperature rating is not high enough.
One more, think about how you are going to fix the housing to the soffit/ceiling.
Sorry, should have clarified. I just want to use the line voltage ones right now. I realize I need a tranformer to use the others. They are eyeballs anyway - not real useful for me.
The cans have holes in the top of the housing, which I can use to screw the cans up to some blocking. I could do the whole installation as a "remodel" type situation if I wanted to.

merc, 50 bucks a pop?
He want's to sell or give? At 50 per, you'd be better off buying new..........remodel or other. ICT?
If 50 for the lot, remember clearance at top of can if NOT ICT.

I'm not buying them, he gave them to me. I was just saying that new, they are about $50 a pop, not counting the bulbs that are already in them. Probably about $5 a bulb too. So it's a nice little grab, I just need to figure out how to save them. He's a nice guy and always has stuff like this. He's got a few hundred sq ft of hardwood flooring he's giving me too.
