I’m looking for a 4″ screw that will be used to fasten 5/8″ plywood over 2″ foam on a house. Because the CDX ply I’ve been using is not fir I have trouble with the screw heads not wanting to countersinking on their own. I have been using a countersink seperately but someone mentioned to me that you can purchase screws that have a ridge or something on the head that will self-countersink without using a seperate bit – does anyone know of these and where I might get them? I thought Rockler might have them but they don’t. McFeely’s has a 10×37/8″ fpt screw that might work.

How about GRK fasteners? Google "GRK fasteners"
They have a #10 x 4" flat head (R4) with the ridges you describe, #25 Torx driver tip.
They also have a 12/14 x 4".

Yeah, GRKs will do it. Will countersink all the way to the other side of the house if you're slow releasing the trigger.
Cost an arm, though.
cost an arm or invst in a leg up - depends on your POV.For somebody trying to predrill the countersink for flush heads, it is not a cost, but an investment that saves cost.

Can you order GRK's online? I have yet to find a site.

I can get them locally so have never looked to buy online. There is so much demand though, I wonder if I oughta start up!I know one of their main reps. He once told me if the lumberyard wont order what I want, call him. But my yard stocks all their stuff. I probably have over a thousand bucks worth of GRK in my trailer.
Have you tried direct contact to GRK Canada?

Where do you park your trailer? LOL!!
No one stocks it near me, I have to go to the yard and order it and wait 2 weeks. That's fine on the screws I use often but sometimes I need a particular size for something. I usually have to improvise. I am no where near successful enough to inventory $1,000 in screws......Ahh well.

link underline buries the underscores - should enter R4_5_6_pro_pak.htm
click "Retailers / Wholesalers" at top of page
click "Retail Locator" from pull down list
enter Country + State + Area Code - no need to fill in yellow fields
or call 1-800-263-0463 - 0830-1700 EDT
Don't know about online dealers - I buy locally from one of 4 dealers.
Good luck!

You have to watch their locator. It is not the best (or the data feed into it).I can get completely different sets of dealers depending if I put in by zip, area code, or state..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
I know that locator is a bit squirrelly.
I get the best results by just entering USA, Delaware, 19802 - it gives me 10 "local" dealers - and they are all within a 1 hour drive.
However, it does not list 2 dealers that are actually the closest to me. Granted their stock is usually limited --- not the whole GRK product line. I use more R4, 9 x 3-1/8", than anything else and they always seem to have them on the shelf.
I think their locator maybe just lists "stocking dealers" or some such company criteria.
The phone number should work no matter what!

I don't think any locator from any manufacturer is very accurate. I have had locators direct me to retailers that have never heard of the product at hand.

nope.
Basic definition is a screw that is inadequate to the task.Because so many guys try to use sheetrock screws for structural applications, which I jump all over them for.

Gotcha.
Thanks - found what I was looking for - plus some good humor!!
Allmost all we use are GRK
That R-4 has a bugle head with self sinking cutters on the shoulder. I don't know how they would sink on something like IPE, but they will power right thru plywood or OSB

m=Mc Feeleys also has #10 x 4" square drive screw that will countersink it self. Nowhere near the quality of the GRK though.ML
Why are you worried about them being countersunk at all? I cant imagine that the screw head would cause any grief with most siding.
