I have built a handful (or two) of redwood patio covers/pergolas out here in the S.F. bay area…I have always limited any scroll cuts (ogee w/ listel, cavetto, ovolo, etc) to 2X lumber, yet I have often seen these same cuts in 4X and even up to 8X timbers. I can see cutting shorts on a bandsaw, but how does one go about preparing the ends of longer lengths? (I simply use a jigsaw on the 2X). Anyone have experience with technique(s) for this situation? Are there special (larger) saws? Appreciate the help.
Cheers, Wm. Gotthardt

Use a small band saw. Put wheels on the stand and move the saw, not the timber.
*Hi William,Check out Mafell They make a big, portable bandsaw specifically for this purpose. If you need something cut, they may be able to point you in the direction of a timber framer in your area with one of these saws.Good health, Weogo
*You need a tool called a porta-band. This is a hand held bandsaw that has a very deep throat. As far as I know milwaukee is the only company that makes one. They have two models that cut 4 3/4 x 4 3/4. They may have larger ones - I have an old catalog. This will easily take care of the smaller timbers. For larger timbers you need to make jigs up that clamp on the ends of the timbers. Then you use a router with a round end bit to cut back and forth accross the end of timber, guided by the jig. I believe FHB had an article about this a while back.-Rob
*Rob porta band/ porter cable maybe?Hard to work on wood with a port-a-bandstand by the band saw on wheels, use the bench top models and add a small stand on wheels under it

Try a company called Barnmasters. They have a web site at, you guessed it, barnmasters.com. They have a bandsaw made by Oliver that is alot cheaper than the Mafell model. Atlthough Mafell tools sure seem to be quality stuff. Good Luck,
Dormer
*Gentlemen, Thanks for both the tips and company referrals, I appreciate it. Cheers, William

Bill & Mike, have you actually done the bandsaw on wheels, personally?
I've moved the timbers through my bandsaw, but this is intriguing, if true. Enlighten me.
*billy, I have not actually tried that. To tell the truth I recycled that from a FHb tip many years ago. But that's nothing. The FHb editor have been paying for recycled tips. Stay tuned for the expose.
