Did I cover it all it the title? Just not enough room, there, ya know?
Working on detached garage. I’m cutting the finished ends of exposed rafter tails that truss company will integrate into their trusses and thought it would be good to slop some sealer on the end grain while I’m at it…probably won’t get paint till next spring. What would be good? Exterior primer? Oil base or acrylic?
I’ve also got to make a choice of roof decking that will be exposed underneath. My first thought was MDO, it’s spendy and pretty slick compared to framing lumber for tails. House has what appears to be fir ply (circa 1964) and it has typical raised/cracked grain, not horrible but I notice it. Option would be ACX ply or maybe something else…suggestions?

Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.

Prime with Cabot Oil Problem Solver Primer with 10% penetrol and mildewcide.
Do the soffit over the rafter tails with WindsorOne beaded board. It will look great.

I agree with the bead board. That is certainly a traditional look for exposed undersides. Similar to a porch ceiling.
I eyeballed WindsorOne. Looks nice but maybe pricey? I'll probably sitick with sheet goods for the sake of speed and simplicity....this is a garage afterall. Maybe T-111 would give similar look.PJ

If you think Windsor One beadboad is expensive (about $1/LF) then you are cheep! ;o)Jeff
