I have 5′ tall brick wing walls on either side of concrete front steps to the house. Five years ago, when the house was tuckpointed, the joint between the steps and bricks was sealed with what appears to be mortar or patching cement. Now they have opened up and I’m trying to decide what is the best material to repair the joint. Something flexible like caulk, but stronger like mortar? Or should i just put some mortar in there and plan on repair ing it every few years? Thanks for any advice.

Bonds well, lasts a long time. Colors just might match your morter joint. Use backer rod behind for gaps 1/4'' and bigger.
