I submitted to all the major search engines on Jan 11/2000 in preparation for spring. Google has spidered my site...none of the others. That is nearly two and a half months! Is this normal now? I thought computers were getting faster? After the investment I have made...this is hard to take. Does anyone have any insight???
*Lawrence,It seemed to take forever for our site also to be able to be found through a search engine. I registered it all over... and waited... and waited. It's still hard to find by a search. A lot of our hits aren't coming from a search engine, but from someone finding the address somewhere else (i.. Chamber of Commerce, etc). I'm afraid the web's so crowded it's easy to be lost in the masses. On the bright side we are collecting a few hits. We also have picked up some new potential clients as a direct result of the web.Good luck being found.Chase
*Same experience here, only I registered my site in August, September, October, November, etc., '99 all over the place, and it still doesn't show up on many of those search engines even now. I gave up on it after that, and anyway, I tend to direct people to my site, and that was always the main intention. To me it's a bit like sending a portfolio to a potential client/gallery, etc., but without the initial expense.
*Guys...don't give up...have faith. I am not talking about the design of the site, I know that inside and out. Google has spidered both sites, and I am ranking first page for 15 topics. The other site was spidered, however my web author decided he knew better, so I have to wait another 2 months. What I am speaking of, is the search engines. How do we know if they are doing what they say they are?Sitting back and trusting theat they are on their way, is not my style. Noone has submitted a site recently? It sounds to me like they take 3 months to spider now...but they post 2-5 weeks on their main pages.
*There are services that you can pay $25 or $35 to do the registering for you. Also, you can insert the HTML tag in your page's HTML header to try to increase your hit rate. For example, I clipped the following off of Fine Homebuilding's home page(I removed the < symbol from the beginning of each HTML statement in order to get it to show up as text):meta name="description" content="Fine Homebuilding - The magazine that brings home owners and home builders together. If your brother-in-law was a builder, you'd ask him. But he's not, so you read Fine Homebuilding, which is written by professional builders.">meta name="keywords" content="construction, carpentry, renovation, home design, woodworking, projects, restoring, plumbing, electrical, houses, house, house design, cad, cad plans, architecture, home ideas, magazine, how-to">Try a test search engine search that requires the keywords of " architecture, home ideas, magazine, and how-to" and you will see how it works. For example, go to http://www.altavista.com and put in +architecture +"home ideas" +magazine +how-toin the window and hit search.
*It's been a couple of months since I submitted mine but it showed up in a couple of days.I may be wrong but my brother (the computer guy) tells me that there is only one database of websites owned by some company. All the search engines pay a subscription fee to use this database. Each search engine may have a different way of searching the one existing base but they all use the same one. When you submit your site to any search engine, the spidering is done by the company that holds the database, not the search engine.
*Jeeze ryan, if that is true, it would explain a few things...like, since my site was down for a total of 7 days in the first month, how I could be missed by 9 out of 10 major search engines. Is your site developing any business yet?Mine is, but I know it could be so much better with the search engines working with us.L
*Lawrence, do make sure your meta tags are set correctly.Interesting (and frustrating) problem.Hey, first off, why aren't you in FHB's lengthy "Sites To See"?
*Lawrence,no, no business from the site. I think it's a good sales tool for those I've already had a first meeting with. Adds credibility. I get alot of hits but I don't work in France so most of the traffic isn't much help to me.
*Hey Andrew, Thanks for the timely advice! Yes, the meta is right, it is now anyhow. The web author decided that he could just swap the meta from one site to the other, you know, after I sent him the proper information about 7 times...LOL(frustrating is right). So when Google finally spidered the site after 2 months, it didn't register for the local(area), keywords as I expected...Oh well...this is life on the web. Sites to see...hmmm, We were there...from the beginning pretty much. Under "Winterburn Group", but when I submitted the address change, I guess it got lost in someone's email. Maybe Sysop can put it up...he or she is bound to read a thread entitled search engines....
*Many search engines blow off sites that don't meet their "criteria" to be included in the engine's database. One thing the major search engines look for is they try to analyze how many potential hits you'll get, and that helps to define 1) if they'll list you, and 2) where on the list you will come out. This is totally separate from registering your site, etc...The best way? Have your site as a link on as many other sites as you can. You can "improve your data" by setting up several ghost websites and having your sites linked from these ghost sites.I may have fumbled or muddled the verbage, so...what you want is as many avenues or conduits to your site as possible. Live links on real pages will obviously get you more hits from folks stumbling upon your sites. Live links on real pages and ghost links from fictitious pages will improve not only your chances of making a search listing, but move you up the listing as well.
*Hey mongo, that's not it. We have 80 odd real links and had nearly 150,000 hits last june. Good point though.
*How did you get that many hits?
*He's good, man. :)
*A lot of those would be hits from me; Lawrences site keeps coming up when I'm searching for porn. Bondage especially for some reason.
*Adrian,ROTF/LOLI knew it was important to be creative with the wording in the meta tags to ensure a diverse audience of hits. Chase
*150000 hits i dont think theirs that many people in our town.Did you have to hire someone to weed threw them. How much are you guys spending in dollars or time on getting these sites developed?I have a lady interested in working for me who has computar skills as well as accounting.Thinking of letting her develope our site in spare time and paying her in the form of commision on work generated by the site. With all the experiance we have here I would like to her if these seems like a good approach.Oh ya were a countertop shop. thanks Boyd
*Have you ever spammed? It doesn't have to be "evil spam", but if you ever send a mass-mailing to addresses collected from your site, that's an instant invitation to be black-balled from a search engine. They do it, but it's near-impossible to find out about it.
*Ryan, I get the hits because of links from other sites, and normally from the search engines. I guess garden structures are a popular search query. We don't spam...so that can't be it. Besides, I submitted the new site..(just created...seperate domain), and that hasn't been spidered yet either... I am not sure, but I think a countertop business could work well, but the site would have to be marketed by traditional methods. Not too many people would expect it. But if you could take orders from it and accept credit cards...sounds ideal from a builder's perspective...L*no porn keywords either...LOL*
*Still hard to believe....Is there anyone who has had their site submitted to the search engines and actually had their site added to the engine listings in the last 9 months?ARE THERE STILL SEARCH ENGINES DOING WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO???I am having a hard time finding any recent...within 6 months, cataloged listings (those that show up in searches), for any subject.Am I the only one that notices these things? This has to be the definition of Frustration!L
*Lawrence:I went to your home page. I got the list of your keywords specified in the meta tag in your header. Here they are:i plan, plans, woodwork, woodworking, garden, structures, structure, arbors, arbours, pergolas, fences, decks, plans for arbors, plans for pergolas, trelliswork, mail orders, orderingThen I preformed some searches using some popular search engines using the keywordsi pergolas arbors trelliswork and i structures. Here are the results:b Altavista: 9 hits - Winterburn group - which I gather is part of your company was #1 and Gardenstructure.com was #3.b Yahoo: 3 hits, Winterburn group was #2 and #3b Excite: 10 hits, your site, Gardenstructure.com was #2b Lycos: 7 hits, Winterburn group was #1.Based on the above results, I'm not sure why you fee there is a problem. Try rethinking your keywords. If you are still not happy with the results, put i sex as one of your keywords!PS: Re using the different search engines, some have a slightly different quarry language. Read the instructions to find out about that.
*Thanks for the effort Matt, however I am after different keywords. All those listings are now absolete...due to the major rebuild that happened at christmas. All I want to know is whether or not anyone has been spidered by any search engine but google in the last 6 months. All the listings you are mentioning are part of an old frame site and do not register for many simple queries. If you look you will find that every single page has different keywords....I just want to see it start working for me...and am pleading for any information that may help the cause...*ripping my hair out here*.Does anyone know of a webmaster's forum or something that I can put the question to? Sorry if I sound a little *out there*, folks, but I can't say I have ever been this frustrated....
*Lawrence:If the problem web site is not http://www.gardenstructure.com, then what is it?
*As you found Matt, gardenstructure.com does not come up in a search for it's own metatext keywords...therefore it has not been spidered. And by clicking on more pages from this site...winterburn group only seems to have 4 pages on Alta Vista. (there are more than 70), and the pages at the other end of the site will rank far better for individual seearches...such as arbors, pergolas, trelliswork....and regional searches....which all adds up to my customers can't find me.Ohhh well, next year is another year....L
*Hey Lawrence,That's quite an improvement over the last version that we discussed -- what was it a year ago?Much more readable, professional looking, not a million logos everywhere and quick loading. Good job!I haven't registered any sites with search engines in quite a while, but I seem to remember that Yahoo! takes a long time to get it, Alta Vista gets it in a couple of days, Hot Bot is pretty quick too, but can be a pain in the *ss to get it in... I used to use free services that would automaticly register with a bunch of engines such as submit-it.com. You can find them by searching for url registration services...Dan
*Ahhh Dan, you are a pal, thanks for the kind words old buddy! I do listen to advice when given...thanks to all for your input, I appreciate all of it.L
*lawrence, yer clearly not using the right keywords. Suggest trying the following "knockers, boobs, big knockers, big boobs, nipples...". You get the picture. Noone ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the marketplace.
*Ok, when I search for "gardenstructure.com": your main page comes up in Yahoo!, Alta Vista infoseek and Northern Light search engines. At Northern Light, a winterburn.com page (links) comes up #2.Plan Order Form page comes up # 1 of 2 with GoTo.comNothing on Direct hit, deja.com, HotBot.com or snap.com.So who searches for gardenstructure.com? Nobody, but it tells you if a particular engine has you listed. You appear to be listed in a few of them but not in others.Refining the search slightly to "gardenstructure" yields these results:Yahoo! #'s 1&2 of 2 total. Same page is listed as being registered in two places (Regional > Countries > Canada > Provinces and Territories > Ontario > Counties and Regions >Simcoe > Cities > Elmvale > Business and Shopping and Regional > Countries > Canada > Business and Economy > Companies > Home and Garden > Woodworking ).At AltaVista, the first 23 of 64 hits go to your site with the exception of three: #13, 19 and 22. They all go to different pages in your web site though (portfolio, order plans, links, main. etc). Not to the main page.At DirectHit, your portfolio page, your main page and your search page come up for a total of 6 of 6 hits -- for some reason your main page came up four times and the others once.Nothing at goto.com, Aww crap, I just hit the post my message button by mistake so I only have a half hour to finish my research and check my spellink.Northern Light lists you #1 of 52. Main page is listed. Also the Winterburn group links page is listed.Nothing at HotBot or deja.comInfo seek lists you #1 of 446 matches. Only your main page is listed.Search engines each work differently. Some require you to register to their directory, some just send out "spiders" to the web to look for queries, some can read meta tags and some can't. It's really kind of a pain in the *ss, but knowing how each one works is just as important as designing a good, useable site. So far I gather that you're registered with Yahoo in two places (Yahoo makes you register your site in appropriate catagories, not just "at large" as others do). You're also registered with AltaVista and Infoseek.Looks like DirectHit spiders the web and your siter spammed the results. You're not registered at goto.com, hotbot, deja.com or snap.com.Next, search for the meta keywords you have in your web pages. (I think my half hour's up, see next message...)Dan
*When searching for your speciffic keywords, (listed in your meta tags) you don't come up on any of them.It seems that you need to edit your key words. The first one is "plan". The second one is "plans". They should be more specific to your business. Arbor, deck and trellis ought to be first. Engines that recognise meta tags usually place a higher importance on the title line than the keywords. So if you search for "trellis", you get a bunch of companies named "Trellis Somethingorother Industries". Customize those keywords to match the most probable search queries of potential customers. Also, you should only have keyword meta tags in the first page. Not in all of them. If I'm searching for arbor pictures and every single page of your site comes up in my searech results I'm going to get pissed at you for not letting me see the other possabilities. Especially if I have a slow modem. This happened on an AltaVista search above. you were twenty one of the first twenty three results. Your first page meta tags (description) should have a sufficient summary of your site to attract visitors. Spamming them won't help.It can be extremely frustrating optimizing your site to various search engines. The best way to get hits is to be linked to reputable spots -- such as fine home building, woodworking and gardening's site.Dan

*This is where a meta-search engine comes in handy. Apple's Sherlock is an example, I don't know of any PC equivalents offhand.
