Every time I try to “search the archives” I get the same old (2002) thread about pipe diameters. I want to read old postings about windows before I post my own query. How come the “search” function doens’t work for me???

NAIL IT !!!
Are you using the "dump" search at the bottom of the message index or the Advanced Search at the top?
While the top one does not always find what I am looking for, even when I know htat it is there, I have never had it give me a wrong thread.
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Well just tried the top advanced search.

this question pops up pretty often. Don't use the search button at the bottom. Rather, use the advanced search feature at the top of the message list.
The copper pipe message isn't a search result. It's a space filler. When you start the search, the copper pipe thread comes up in the message reading frame, and the index frame, the one on the left that usually has a list of discussions, gets blanked out. When the search is done, the index frame will either show the list of messages it found, or "0 messages found".
The search takes some time. I just now tried searching for "windows" and it took 1 minute 26 seconds. During really busy times, it can take several minutes.
Aha! That works -- thanks a lot. I now have 500 messages on Andersen windows to read.
