I am starting a project to add a second story to a small house. The depth of the house is approx. 20 feet. I plan on spanning the entire depth with a manuf. truss joist bearing on the existing plates. Should I shim the the plates with 1×4’s to raise the new joists up a bit to avoid problems of deflection? Any other hints or pitfalls I should consider?
Thank you for any help

Fred, How about a little more info to go on before we jump in with the advice...
Does the house currently have trusses, or rafters? if it's rafters, are you planning on leaving the existing ceiling joists and sheetrock? will you be cantelevering the second story at all, or just going straight up? have you taken a good look in the attic to see how much stuff,(wiring, ductwork, plumbing vents, etc.) is going to be in your way?
Give us some details and we'll see what we can come up with in the way of advice, suggestions, etc.
