it's not bad... it just won't grow....
honest i had a 50lb bag that had to be 5 yrs old... i tossed it out on a graded lot... and i'd guess i had about 20% that grew i didn't have a clue what type seed it was other than "grass"

That came up yesterday on a local talkshow. And the host, that retired from his own lawn service company, said that it would be fine. In fact it will germentate quicker.
But at 5 years it would be deteriating.
just think of it as "Feeding the birds"
