Hi,
I just installed a pair of sinks today. As I got on it I noticed there were some mighty gaps between the rim and tile. About half rim un-flat the other half tile weird. Biggest gap about 1/4″ in places but 50% perfect, 35% about 1/8″+/- and the rest closer to 1/4″.
I had planned on using silicone but the HO wanted a grouted edge. So I skipped the silicone altogether and set it with grout like I was setting bricks in mortar. I used lots of it and set it frim with lots of sqeeze out. There wasn’t a lot of surface to do both because of the way the hole was cut and I didn’t want to use too much silicone as I figured the grout wouldn’t adhere to it.
Now..Is this a good solution? I couldn’t come up with any other way to do it. I’m considering epoxying some wood underneath the bowl and screwing some strapping to it but is this nessasary?
Any other thoughts appreciatted.

sounds fine if you want to come back, redo it, and still have the HO pissed at you. If it's that far from flat, you know the grouts going to crack out. Grout wasn't made to fill quarter inch gaps. Also, if the problem is with the sink rim (as opposed to a bad tiling job, maybe you should take the sink back and complain and get a more level rimmed sink?)
Why not use silicon around if, then push it in the a Q-tip so that you have a small channel and try to fill the channel with grout. I still think it will crack out, but maybe it will buy you a year before doing it.
Make sure you tell your HO that you advise against it and don't think it's a good idea, because when it cracks out, they're going to blame you.

My tile supplier stocks sanded grout-caulk in every color to match Custom grout.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
I should say it's a porcelin sink so no rust problem. It also had a good lip on it to accept the grout.Anyway if it's gonna fail I'll have to address it. The HO was adamant about having a grouted edge and it does look good. Maybe if I secure the bowl it will hold and I can explain the potenrial problem to the HO and let them decide. Thanks for the heads up.N
Hi, I was back at the job today and was going to remove the grout and set it better.I couldn't get it loose! Miaght as well have been set with epoxy. I even pried around the back and it's holding firm.As far as I can tell grout is an excellent way to cement a porcelin sink to a tile deck.I'll continue the thread if there's any problems in the future.N
Something is not flat.
Either the counter and the tile, or the sink.
Until that is corrected you have a problem.
Grout was a good stab at it. Only problem is it will likely hold moisture and rust at the cast iron surface of the sink , plus it will not hold the sink iin place. It has poor adhesive quallities at best.
