Gotta replace 4 slate tiles (range from 3X5 to 11X11) on a floor. Looks like the original installation used some sort of thinset over a mortar bed. Now I’m told just set ’em into the mortar and that will stick ’em down. True?

For the slate tiles I'm setting on the current job....the tile store recommended and the designer spec'd Kerabond thinset...mixed with Keralastic(looks like skim milk)....instead of water.
Supposed to be the bullet-proof way to go for difficult tiles. Works pretty much just like regular thinset...I usually use Ultraflex.
The Kera-system bonds well..and also gives more flex. Very sticky stuff. I know they say it can even be used over existing tile...so a patch over an old mudbed shouldn't be a problem. Ask at your local tile place. I shop Best Tile here. I know they have other outlets too.
Both Ultraflex and Kerabond are made by Mapei. Jeff
.......Sometimes on the toll road of life.....a handful of change is good.......
Thinset mixed with the acrylic latex mortar additive always worked for me on slate......Always seems to be some kinda new mix.....latex additive rather then just water is sticky as hell stuck to heaven.......never had any problm with it but what do I know
Be well
