In a new cottage construction, some fill was required at the front part of the basement to bring the ground up to the level of the excavated area. In preparation for pouring a concrete floor, a contractor has suggested compacting the filled area of the floor using the following method. He suggests flooding the interior of the basement with water and letting it drain through the ground which is mostly coarse sand and gravel. He thinks this will settle the filled area effectively and cheaply.
Should I be concerned about the water seeping under the footings and washing away the ground they sit on? What do you think about his suggestion?
